Katelyn Smith ► Resident ► 21 ► Kaya Scodelario
Can anybody find me somebody to love? Got no feel, I got no rhythm, I just keep losing my beat.
Born and raised in Roswell, New Mexico. Moved to Maddox a few months ago.
Is currently looking for a job—she’s scoping out the florists and the library.
Is unaware of the existence of supernaturals.
In her third year of primary school, Katelyn was allotted the task of writing a report on her hero. It took the girl no time at all to pick her subject—she worshiped her older brother Chuck. He seemed to know everything and exhibited a self-confidence that Katelyn, seven years younger than he, though was wisdom beyond what she could ever achieve. He dazzled her, made her laugh, and gave her hope. As a student, Katelyn was difficult—she was not surpassingly intelligent and often got in trouble for strolling around class without permission. She wanted to work when she felt like it and not when the teacher instructed her to. Her mother and Doctor called it attention deficit hyperactive disorder—but Chuck told her that she held more brains and creativity in her pinky than the other kids did in their entire bodies. He convinced her she was unique in a positive way, and lifted her spirits whenever kids poked fun at her.
Katelyn’s life was turned upside-down when Chuck disappeared. She lost her best friend and biggest advocate, and in turn got a broken-hearted single mother who yearned for her first born boy. From that moment on, Katelyn was responsible for herself. She rode her bike to school and passed her classes, with much effort. She progressed to high school and got a part-time job at a shop on the main drag, eventually gathering enough money to purchase her own car. After she graduated she attended the local community college, gaining her Associates in Business. She continued to work at the local store specializing in extraterrestrial information and fare—and it was there she met Paul Shay. She and Paul proved to have a lot in common—only because Katelyn has everything in common with whoever she is talking to at the moment—and the two were fast friends. He paid attention to her and inquired about her life; he bought her pretty things and took her to fancy restaurants. He filled a void that had been opened the minute Chuck vanished.
When Paul told her he was temporarily moving to Maddox, staying in Roswell wasn’t an option. She immediately got things in order so that she could leave, quitting her entry-level job. She hopes she can move up the chain in Maddox, considering her expertise in Business.
Katelyn is enigmatic when it comes to personality, because she hasn’t quite figured herself out. She laughs when others laugh, cries when others cries, all in a desperate attempt to gain their good favor and affection. She has a tendency to be clingy and aggressive, as she is desperate for love and attention, something she didn’t receive from her mother after her brother’s disappearance. This is why she hasn’t ceased friendship with Paul, despite the fact that he makes her feel rather drained on a daily basis. Lately, since her friendship with Paul has progressed to something more physical, she is feeling depressed—she chalks it up to lustful longing that he won’t reciprocate.
Relationships:
Moved to Maddox with best friend Paul Shay—who she thinks is human—because of his job. Katelyn is confused by their relationship, as he has sex with her whenever he cares to but they have not yet defined their boundaries or decided on a label. She thinks of him as her boyfriend, though she has a feeling it isn’t mutual.
Has no idea her brother Chuck (now going by Jacob Holt) is actually alive... or well, a vampire.
Thinks she could get along well with Lyanna Alvah, as the girl seems kind and caring, just what Katelyn needs. She hopes the two will be working together at the florists in the near future.
Has spoken to Roscoe Abrams a few times, and is determined for the two to become friends. She’s considering tactics to speed up the situation—some of which may be illegal.
Has no idea, but she is going to be the pet project of Tate Foster and Troian Bell. Most people wouldn't take kindly to finding out that they are being 'made over', but who knows, it may be exactly what Katelyn needs.

What did the pineapple say to the chimney?
Nice snappy use of video this week from the North East team on Gazette Live for their joke competition.
Magician Paul Daniels judged the 'Tell Us Your Joke' competition and this lovely little video below has the winner Katelyn Smith telling her joke direct to the camera.
It's local, funny, works alongside the print campaign and the little girl is very sweet in her delivery of the joke (although I did have to replay it three times to catch exactly what she said).
The punchline as the story informs us is: "You have no eyeballs".
Readers struggling to “get it” should give up now - it doesn’t make sense and it was the childlike silliness of the joke which amused South Bank-born Paul.
