Caroline felt her heart shatter into pieces. Even though she and Kate had never explicitly defined themselves, the idea that Katelynn didn't know who she was hurt the blonde. She settled herself beside the vampire, settling her hands in her lap to keep herself from grabbing the other's hand.

I don't know who you are. Where's my sister? Katelynn had started speaking Bulgarian, which was completely lost on Caroline.
"Kate, Kate, it's okay." Caroline reached for Katelynn's hands, giving them a squeeze. "It's me, it's Caroline. Don't you remember? We've been--we've been seeing each other. Do you remember when I made you that dinner? I shocked the hell out of you. Please, remember, Kate. Please."
