the shit i see on the enemy team when im on my 10 lose streak
du couteau siblings
tbh i also had a "whateverrr generic white guy" attitude towards garen until I read his story where he said the witch was called "The Lady of the Stones" instead of "rock hag" (which is what she was really being called) because he believed being honest would be rude. Like. That is such good nod to the entire point of his character. he would rather live a pretty lie than face an ugly truth but out of honest, good intentions.
usually the character trait of being a liar is because they're manipulative or spoiled or ambitious but garen is just. genuinely devoted to being noble, polite & true to demacian ideals. it's an interesting twist of the archetype to me & I think kat will be the catalyst to him finally accepting his country for what it is (& vice-versa for kat w/noxus) because it certainly isn't going to be lux at this rate
Images I can hear.
cannot believe i am league of legends posting on main but after that welcome to noxus cinematic:
katarina can be into girls and also have a really cute relationship with garen. really seeing some biphobic undertones/straight up phobia from both sides of this whole discourse.
'garen is complicit in-' it is easier to list league of legends characters who aren't complicit in human rights violations and war crimes. katarina is by the same logic complicit in her country's crimes, plus pretty much all garen's stories have him learning to see past the prejudices he's been raised to have since birth. it's why they're such a good enemies-to-lovers ship - they inspire each other to expand their worldviews and be better people.
they are fictional characters. they do not exist in real life. i cannot stress this one enough. someone on twitter saying they wish katarina had a female love interest is not going to impact your life in any way.
more to the point, is league of legends ship discourse really the hill you want to die on? league of fucking legends?
hhhhngh knife lady hot
Been thinking up a Postclassic Mesoamerican Katgaren AU with Tenochca assassin Katarina and Tlaxcalan warrior Garen…
You get a dynamic between the Triple Alliance & the Confederacy of Tlaxcala similar to the one between the Noxian Empire and Demacia: the Triple Alliance attempting to slowly put the squeeze on Tlaxcala politically, militarily, and economically as a potential prelude to outright annexation (particularly into the early 1500s). On top of the imperialistic designs of the Mexica, they also had gladiatorial-like fighting (via the temalacatl) and glorified war and combat, which adds onto the parallels with Noxus nicely.
Tlaxcala fights multiple “flower wars” (conflicts whose objective was solely to take captives for sacrifice, slavery, ritual combat, etc.) of varying degrees of intensity against Tenochtitlán and its allies after the empire’s rise and steadfastly maintains its independence all the while despite being surrounded on all sides.
Naturally assassins did not exist in Mesoamerica the way that Katarina does in League Of Legends (and women did not tend to have a role in combat and politics bundled together like she does) but consider for this AU-Kat serving the Huey Tlatoani (Great Speaker/Emperor) of Tenochtitlán, Swain. She’s a member of the city’s nobility, taught and trained in the calmecac (school exclusively for nobles) since she was a child. As an assassin she sneaks in and out of various villages and altepetl (city-states), taking out her marks with ease using a large pair of obsidian blades. I imagine her wearing something like this but in a style more appropriate for combat:
As a Tlaxcalan warrior, Garen is a more conventional archetype in this setting. He’d likewise be of the nobility of Tlaxcala, serving with distinction in the wars against the Triple Alliance. These actions might elevate him to the Teteuctin (political officials promoted through military success). I’d like to think of him wearing something like these Tlaxcalan warriors to battle, except that he carries only a massive macuahuitl (Mesoamerican obsidian tipped sword) and no shield.
As for how Nahua! Katarina & Garen meet: Kat probably gets an assignment from Swain to take out a mark in Tlaxcala. She sneaks into the confederacy and Garen stops her after she’s killed her target. Katarina enjoys fighting him, and she eventually withdraws with Garen losing her trail in the night. They come across each other multiple times afterwards in Cholula and other altepetl that their respective polities have dealings with. Sometimes they fight if Kat’s attempting an assassination, and other times they steal opportunities to talk to each other during occasional negotiations as they get to know each other better. There are times when they spar simply to spar, and this starts to take on the character of a personal flower war between the two of them-instead of captives being taken, whoever loses gifts the winner with valuable wares from their homeland (idk I just think that’d be pretty cute). They get closer despite the conflict between the states they serve and the fact that it would be so much easier to remain enemies.
Three possible routes for how this concludes:
1. If the Spanish arrive and the Conquest goes down as it does historically Kat & Garen elope and flee deep into Central America, attempting to stay one step ahead of the Europeans.
2. Garen marches alongside Tlaxcalan & Spanish forces against Tenochtitlán and he dies together with Kat during the siege of the city in 1521.
3. The Spanish Conquest doesn’t happen in this AU and Tlaxcala eventually becomes an ally of or a tributary state to the Triple Alliance. K & G are able to get together with political marriage shenanigans as a part of the negotiations. (Also featuring Jarvan IV basically just being Xicotencatl the Younger in this situation because why not).
