Love the blog, Garens my favorite character ever I love reading any little tidbit or thought about him!

Any thoughts on Garen/Katarina? Their dynamic, perceptions of eachother, how you’d image a relationship would develop etc etc

Ugh, I love them so much. Garen really is the immovable object to Katarina's unstoppable force.

Garen might not be as visibly "cool" as Katarina but I actually kind of adore the whole "swag-gap couple" thing they have going on—it brings out unexpected aspects of their characters. Like, sure, Garen might be a stern, by-the-books military dude, but look at the stunning redhead he pulled—he's got game. And Katarina might be a fiery, rebellious badass, but maybe, just maybe, her personal teddy bear doesn't need to be covered in spikes and studs. It kinda defeats the purpose of a teddy bear, no?

I love it for Katarina especially. Because I know my girl has dependable, no, DISCERNING taste in men. She literally had to infiltrate an enemy state Solid Snake-style to even cross paths with a man good enough for her and you know what? That's valid as hell. Like, yes, you go girl. Don't settle for less, settle for THE dictionary definition of hunk/beefcake/studmuffin/etc. Settle for prince charming if he could win an Arnold Classic on a random Thursday. That's AMBITION.

And conversely I love the idea that for Garen, an otherwise exemplary Demacian, Katarina is the ONE detour he's willing to go down full-speed because he just loves her that much. He'd treat her so good. I specifically love the idea of Garen being a house husband for Katarina. Even the dagger-throwing assassin extraordinaire can't say no to a warm plate of brown butter chocolate chip cookies when she comes back home from work. Katarina is the reliable call-to-adventure in Garen's routine-based life, and Garen is the one stalwart constant in Katarina's YOLO ass life. And that's so beautiful, ugh.

My primary complaint about the ship is that it's stuck in this strange limbo where it IS canon and yet there's almost no canon material exploring their relationship; it's weird. I know we have the Katarina comic and some voice lines confirming their relationship but I need MORE. I wonder if the whole Demacia Noxus thing makes Garen x Katarina stories a minefield to write narrative-wise, but it's probably just that Riot is lazy as hell and doesn't write anything at all.

And in the end I'd rather keep the warring nations dynamic because it adds so much to the relationship even though, again, Riot doesn't do anything with it. The trope of the knight who secretly loves the untouchable lady is cliché as hell (I mean, they were writing about it in the MEDIEVAL times) but it's a cliché for a reason, okay? He's a strict, disciplined guy. He's practiced restraint all his life, but all of a sudden, that ability eludes him. Which is hot as hell!

I love the idea of Garen being a big eater. He'd fuck UP some seafood boil. He'd be a farmer's market CELEBRITY. An all-you-can-eat HATES to see him coming. And not just in terms of quantity, but also in having an adventurous palate. He'd love his durians, offal meats, fermented foods. Very "waste not, want not" mentality. I'd like to think he'd be a half-decent cook... A true expert in the "dad" culinary arts: baking cookies, flippin' pancakes, brewing beer, fishing fish, pickling pickles... Because whoever you ship him with, you think Katarina is doing the cooking? You think Darius is doing the cooking? Girl.

His quiet, "Lux," sounds strangled, hand clenching in your hair. When you pull back to check on him you're shocked to recognize that his eyes are misty in the moonlight, and that's all the warning you get before he swoops down and crushes your mouth beneath his. The intensity slams into your ribs, bowling you head over heels, but the moment his thumb caresses your jaw you're lost. Ruthless and tender. His reluctance from your first kiss is nowhere to be found, angling his head to deepen it with an urgency that sweeps your sensibilities right out from under you — like he's trying to imprint all the words he hasn't said onto your skin. It's everything you've been craving, it's all and it's more. It's an endless well of unsatisfied yearning, it's need and desire and adoration, the world collapsing as though this right here, this long-resisted and hard-won union, is the only thing that matters. Your fingers wind their way into his hair, a sigh on your lips as he coaxes you open beneath him. The sharp edges of his shackles dig into your waist as he squeezes you flush against his chest, his hard metal collar digging into your sternum, and you're certain his arms are the only thing keeping you somewhat upright as the force of his attention dips you backwards. When the kiss ends his palm strokes your cheek, lidded eyes darting between yours with a naked want he's been remarkably good at obfuscating until now. His thumb graces your bottom lip only a moment before he kisses you again, softer, and your knees go weak as his grip at your ribs tightens. "You have no idea," he murmurs, and you can hear the thickness in his throat, choked and helpless, and your mind spins dizzy at the depths implied in that emotion. "No idea what you mean to me." He holds you like a treasure, like some precious thing in his grasp, a magnitude of affection so strong that all his restraint and careful distance has been abandoned entirely, so you can't imagine what more he could impress upon you. The cage of his shackles is uncomfortable, even a little painful, but you like that he can't seem to hold back from embracing you any longer.

You ever care about somebody so much that it hurts? Yeah.

Another scene from chapter 9. A lot of the effort behind writing War of Hearts came from wanting to see Lux and Sylas heal from the trauma they'd inflicted on each other, but they're also both understandably wary of being hurt again. I find the idea of putting in the work to repair their relationship an excellent parallel to repairing Demacia on a larger scale. Plus, they encourage all the best parts of each other. 🤗
