Alice pushed open the door to her dorm room, her heart pounding with excitement. Sunlight streamed through the large window, casting long streaks of light across the bare walls. The room was devoid of any personality, and she was excited to make it her own.
She had dreamed of this moment for as long as she could remember. Ever since she was little, she had imagined herself following in her parents’ footsteps.
They had accompanied her, to help get her settled in. For Kate and James, returning to Foxbury was a surreal experience. They met here years ago and hoped Alice too would find happiness here.
They got to work, unpacking boxes and folding clothes. Soon the room was ready before they were. When the last box was folded and set aside, they pulled her into a hug.
It was hard to say goodbye, it felt like they had just gotten her back. But she promised she would call often and come home for Winterfest. Eventually, Kate loosened her grip and nodded toward the door. “We should go before I start crying.” Alice opened the door to walk them out and stopped short, struck by the familiar face that had moved in across the hall.
