“We have to tell him”

In memory of Be My Princess for the transfer date’s expire, let us remember the original app that’ll also expire in the near future.
The rooftop of La Cassia restaurant buzzed with energy. The graduating class and their families, who had come to celebrate, filled every available seat.
As they always did, the Borden and Spencer families sat together. At one end of the table, the parents laughed and reminisced about their alma mater over wine. Beaming with pride as they spoke about upcoming move-in days and bright futures. Behind them, they could hear another family making a toast “To new beginnings”.
But the other end of the table was nearly silent. Only the scraping of forks denoted the presence of the three graduates.
Alice's stomach churned. She was painfully aware of the space between them but too afraid to say anything. She watched as Will’s grip on his fork tensed. He kept his eyes on his plate, picking at his food and avoiding eye contact. She noticed Drew had barely touched his meal, his gaze fixed on nothing in particular.
She had planned to talk to each of them after dinner but her own feelings suddenly felt small compared to Will’s disappointment. Instead, she focused on dissecting her plate and pretending everything was alright.

The warm evening air carried the sound of conversation and the clatter of silverware, from every table except one. James noticed the somber mood of the graduates and decided to strike up a conversation with the twin across from him. Although he had known them all their lives he rarely spoke to any of his daughter's friends. It was best to stick with a safe topic. “So Will, are you excited to move in tomorrow?”.
Alice’s breath caught in her throat, while Drew suddenly developed a ravenous appetite. Will couldn’t even bring himself to answer, his face growing redder by the second.
The pause was long enough that his father took notice. “Of course, he is,” Owen cut in, “Both of my boys are going to Foxbury, I couldn’t be prouder,”.
The weight of his pride was too much to bear. “I’m not going.” Will blurted and the chatter around them died abruptly. Owen tensed, furrowing his brow towards his son, “What do you mean you’re not going?” he asked slowly.
“I didn’t get in,” Will croaked, pushing back his chair abruptly, the screech of it cutting through the low hum of the restaurant. Without another word, he strode toward the exit.
The table fell silent as tension settled over them, thick and suffocating. Their families, once as close as if they were one, now leaned away from each other. Alice shot a glance at her father in reproach, but he was already sick with guilt.
She felt Drew’s gaze before she turned and met his eyes over the table. An understanding grew between them as the silent chaos continued around them. Alice mouthed, “I’ve got this,” and ran after Will.
