This book was not what I expected, but definitely still worth the read. Based on true stories, Conversion shows some of the dark and twisted ways that history repeats itself. When high school senior Colleen Rowley’s fellow students begin developing mysterious (and terrifying) symptoms, she can’t help but wonder if everything at her school is as it seems. Meanwhile in Salem Village, 300 years prior, Ann Putnam begins her confession of what really went on during the witch trials she was a part of. Although I’ve always been fascinated by the Salem Witch trials, I actually found myself much more interested in Colleen’s story than Ann’s. I often had to force myself not to skim Ann’s chapters because I was so desperate to discover what was really going on at St. Joan’s. (My guess was right, but also wrong..) Although the end disappointed me a little, I still found myself thinking about this book long after I finished reading it. Katherine Howe crafts a powerful story about how pressure - in any form - can effect us, and that what you see isn’t always what you get.
