"H-Happy Valentines Day, Julien. I ho-hope you enjoy this gift! I m-made sure it was non al-alcoholic just for you!" In the vintner's hands were a freshly prepared bottle of non alcoholic red wine, the label adorned with hand drawn mushrooms and the male's name. "I th-thought it would pair w-well with a mushroom dish!"
"I-" His mouth hung open for longer than necessary, in anticipation of a sentence that hadn't even started forming.
Nervous about the growing length of his silence, Julien resorted to a habit established while naming farm animals: a quick inventory of his emotional state, to root out where those thoughts were snagging. 'Stunned'? Not quite right. Something between 'astonished' and 'bewildered' could work.
"Uh- Thank you," He managed, carefully taking the elegant bottle from her pale hands. That was the easy part. "Thank you, so much."
On this cold-season holiday, usually dedicated to affection of the romantic sort, Katherine had thought of him. Katherine, a woman known for her beautiful singing voice, with looks to match, whose time could have easily been spent elsewhere, was here to deliver a gift to him. A guy usually forgotten or ignored during this particular celebration. And a gift that couldn't easily be dismissed as a hollow gesture. Evidently, hand drawn mushrooms on a bottle of non-alcoholic wine made for the perfect inoculation against any excuse insecurity could craft.
He tried on a casual grin, then looked down to admire the bottle and discreetly blink away a weird stinging sensation behind his eyes. "I'm sure it will be perfect with a mushroom dish," he echoed, fully aware he'd just been betrayed by a tremble in his own voice.
If he was naming the wine, he might call it 'Grateful'.

Palm fronds fluttered softly in the chilled, newly winter breeze, the sun blaring in the clear blue sky above. Jenna laid out on what could only be described as an impossibly plush beach towel, her freckled, pale skin glowing warmly, exposed but for a swimsuit that cost more than most people’s yearly salary.
The auburn-haired woman smirked at her phone, her eyes sparkling behind circular shades. She had decided to spend the day lazily, as Nikoma was probably dead in a ditch somewhere, and Mitsy and been hit with a bad bout of hayfever. And since this was probably the sunniest day since the colder seasons had arrived, why not sit in the sun for a few hours?
Jen put down her phone for a second, re-aligning herself with her towel, offhandedly brushing the golden sand from her bare skin. She surveyed the beachscape, pulling her glasses down her nose to take in the saturated colour of the almost untouched paradise. It’s funny, Jenna thought to herself, this is the only part of this town I wouldn’t change...
Except maybe I’d add in a resort.
Her train of thought garnered a snicker from the sun-kissed executive, as she continued to watch the waves crash against the pier. Shame there wasn’t any shirtless hunks in the waves... Haysmith, or Almanzar.... Mm. There was time for daydreaming later - a figure had emerged from the tackle shop. Silver long hair spilled from a white straw hat, and a sheer cherry-blossom patterned shawl blew gently behind the figure. It took a few moments for the person to register in Jenna’s mind - Katherine Kirkpatrick, wine extrordinaire. That explained the empty basket wrapped gingerly around her arms.
Perhaps it was time to start working her Simmons magic - Kirkpatrick would be the best possible supplier of the good in the area, and to round it all off, the woman seemed easily intimidated. The perfect first target.
“Miss Kirkpatrick?” Jenna’s honeytrap voice rang out across the beach, “I haven’t seen you in months! Come over here!”
