The girl in platform pink flip-flops stumbles in my headlights on the broken pavement. Beside her, the boy in the gray overcoat pulls her from the road in January rain. My foot on the brake, she was never in danger, except perhaps— her face now contorted by tears— from the misapprehension that here in this fractured public space unmended asphalt absence of sidewalks anonymous, glaring cars she is somehow to blame.

and if found to make nothing more than a stitch in water
but even so the unimaginable ripple might touch the tongue
of a passing deer who has bent to drink so long and so deeply
I forget my fear and become the current in her liquid eye

Out of the Garden, 4
When nasturtiums bloom offering their spiced petals, we try to be grateful.
They sprawl over the zinnias, outgrow borders, tangle the lawn, their rubied excess and startle of flame make a mess of our plans.
Even pulled up by the handful they bloom again in compost, ribbed seeds soon sheltering under each leaf.
What can we do but give in? Insistent, unfathomable abundance remakes our desires. Perhaps, after all, this is the flower we need.

Finding The Heart ~ Kathryn Kirkpatrick
Under the hydrangea, a heart the dogs have found, a deer's left by a hunter in our woods, the carcass gutted where it lay, and I, having never seen anything like it, larger than anyone's fist I know of, fetch the shovel because it is so newly out of the body, I am sure it was beating only yesterday or the day before and so bare beside the knife's fresh cut and so powerful, somehow, as if it did the work of living still that I cannot bear this awful cleaving from the breath it made and I dig a small grave.
