Audiences got their first look at Alexander Skarsgård playing a man crafted from wicker, and it’s safe to say the internet instantly lost its mind.
Black Bear’s Wicker, based on author Ursula Wills-Jones’s short story, The Wicker Husband, follows a fisherwoman (Olivia Colman) who commissions the local basketmaker (Peter Dinklage) to weave her a husband (Skarsgård). However, when the quiet village realizes he’s the man of any woman’s dreams, his presence sparks jealousy and chaos.
Despite the film debuting at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, it wasn’t until last week that the general public got a first look at the pic, including a teaser of what Skarsgård is packing in his little (or rather, fans are hoping big) basket.
For the girlies who love romantic fantasy novels and franchises, this movie is right up their alley. And many of them weren’t afraid to make that known on social media. Once the trailer made its way on TikTok, women flooded the comment sections in pleasant confusion, and their reactions did not disappoint.
“Hell yeah! 50 shades of Pinocchio! Worth the splinters,” one person wrote, referencing the erotic Fifty Shades of Grey franchise, while another user added, “The way you can hear the wicker expanding is killing.” One user noted, “I love how simultaneously confused and thirsty everyone is,” while another person shared, “The bar is so low for men we’re romanticizing baskets.”
Those are just a few of the thousands of reactions to the trailer posted on social media. Fandango’s post currently has more than 11 million views on TikTok, so it’s clear people are intrigued by the film’s unique concept.

In other videos’ comment sections, some were also diving into wicker penis-related logistics. “Can you imagine the splinters?” someone wrote.
These are obviously fictional problems, but that didn’t stop people from coming in to ease any potential concerns. “Wicker has a wax lining that makes it smooth so I’m not worried,” one person wrote. Another added, “Wicker doesn’t splinter if it’s treated properly.”
There’s no doubt that Skarsgård, a conventionally attractive actor known to take on eccentric and unconventional roles, is also playing a big part in the film’s allure. It seems audiences like seeing him in bizarre roles just as much as he likes playing them (he previously played a kinky biker in the BDSM-themed movie Pillion and a silent, Amish bartender in the sci-fi thriller Mute).
“I have a feeling that Alexander Skarsgård only accepts the role if it requires him to do weird shit,” one person quipped on TikTok.
Only time will tell if Wicker will be a surprise hit at the box office come its theatrical release in October, but if anyone can pull it off, it’s the horny Booktok girlies. And as many have already pointed out, audiences have been begging for more original stories, especially after the recent box success of Obsession, Backrooms and Project Hail Mary. Well, Wicker has now entered the chat and said: here, damn.
“Y’all see what you did, you asked for more original movies and now we got 50 shades of basket case,” another user joked on social.
Wicker, also starring Elizabeth Debicki, Ella Bruccoleri and Richard E. Grant, is set to open wide in theaters on Oct. 30. The film was directed by Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson.

The actor’s “dream is finally coming true” as the Wicker Husband in Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson’s comedic fable.
Alexander Skarsgård is living out a lifelong dream by playing a man made out of wicker — more on that in a second.
Entertainment Weekly can exclusively reveal the first trailer for Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson’s upcoming film, Wicker. The comedic, heartfelt fable stars Olivia Colman as the Fisherwoman, who has long been teased by her fellow townspeople for being “single and stinky.” In an attempt at revenge, she recruits the local Basketmaker (Peter Dinklage) to weave her a perfect partner, her Wicker Husband (Skarsgård).
“Most male actors dream of playing Hamlet at some point in their career. I never did,” Skarsgård tells EW. “My dream was always to have nipples made out of wicker. Thanks to our wonderful directors, Eleanor and Alex, and the brilliant artists at Wētā in New Zealand, my dream has finally come true.”
The trailer opens with Colman having loud, passionate sex with her Wicker Husband, which poses some technical questions about the film’s many sex scenes — especially considering Skarsgård’s intricately woven costume and facial prosthetics were created practically. (Wētā Workshop, the special effects house behind The Lord of the Rings, designed and built the look.)
Despite the delicate nature of the costume and subject matter, Fischer and Wilson say the sex scenes were “fun” to choreograph. They credit Ita O’Brien, “the godmother of intimacy coordinating,” with helping the actors (who shot the scenes during their first week on set) feel comfortable.
“These scenes definitely required some of the most detailed prep of all of the movie — they were very specific in the script, and every shot was boarded, rehearsed, and reboarded ahead of time,” the directors tell EW. “Of course, the wicker suit added to the dynamic.”
As the trailer continues, it’s apparent that the Wicker Husband makes quite the impression on the village women, especially the stuffy Tailor’s Wife (Elizabeth Debicki), who starts to spiral over the Fisherwoman’s rather unconventional union.
“I loved the Fisherwoman,” Colman says. “She’s the only one not toeing the line.”
The Oscar-winner calls Wicker “one of the best and most original scripts I’d read in a long time,” which is a testament to Fischer and Wilson’s screenplay, adapted from the short story “The Wicker Husband” by Ursula Wills-Jones. Seeing Skarsgård in costume also heightened the movie’s allure.
“Alex is funny, intelligent, and beautiful anyway — in the wicker costume, he’s breathtaking,” Colman gushes. “Everything is exaggerated; he’s a work of art. Alex fills the Wicker Husband with a beautiful soul.”
Both Fischer and Wilson agreed, admitting they had some “anxiety” about what the suit would look like before seeing him in it.

“Alex’s performance, while incredibly nuanced and understated, was very technically and physically challenging, and it’s really the marriage of the prosthetic and the performance that sells the whole thing,” the directing duo notes. “Once he was walking and talking as the Wicker Husband, we knew the spectacle, the romance, the whole heart of the movie was in safe hands.”
Wicker hits select theaters on Oct. 23, with a wider release on Oct. 30.
