The Thermals - How We Know
7/2/20.
I got several emails from Sub Pop yesterday announcing new “releases”. It looks like they’ve put The Thermals (Portland, Oregon) catalogue on Bandcamp. “The Body, The Blood, The Machine” is easily (in my mind) their best album. While the lyrical material can be depressing (it was made in 2003. Although, in retrospect, not as depressing as our current times), but the music is anthemic without being stadium rock.
Sub Pop has issued two reissues (see this Discogs link), but you can simply access the black vinyl via this Bandcamp page.
Fans of Ted Leo & The Pharmacists, Mo Troper, SAVAK or Jeff Rosenstock....take note. If you haven’t listened to this album, then do so.
Love Always // We Won’t Go Back
“Battle Hymns” is a protest LP whose proceeds go to Planned Parenthood, ACLU, and 350.org... The album includes tracks by members of Sleater-Kinney, Stephen Malkmus of Pavement, Rebecca Gates, and many others. And it’s pretty damn good!
7/6/26.
My "in" to The Thermals was the album "The Body, The Blood, The Machine". I fell in love with Hutch Harris' vocal style, his melodies and of course the accompanying music courtesy of Kathy Foster and Jordan Hudson.
It looks like we are getting a new Thermals (Portland, Oregon) record. While I'm pretty stoked, I'm tempering expectations as from the sound of it, this is mostly a Hutch Harris solo effort. Kathy Foster helped play, but it doesn't really seem like she had a hand in writing any of the songs. But, in one "interview" Hutch assured us that "SHE'S RIGHT HERE, sitting next to me working hard on the layout for the LP, as I write this. Not only did I have Kathy’s blessing to make a Thermals LP, I had her help as well."
"Good Morning Fellow Scavengers" certainly sounds like The Thermals, who disbanded back in 2018. But apparently Harris missed, "the noise, the nerves and the chaos that the band always embodied. The exuberance, the raw power, and the punctuality!"
We posted "The Body, The Blood, The Machine" back in 2020. I mentioned Ted Leo & The Pharmacists back then as a band that put me in a similar mood. I might add Titus Andronicus to that.
This is being issued by Hutch's own label - Catsup Aspic. The CD version is limited to 50 with handmade covers/signature by Hutch.
For the Record #171: Slang's "Cockroach in a Ghost Town"
Portland supergroup Slang’s debut album is diverse, tightly-performed, and creatively-produced, and both deeply weird and unexpectedly catchy. We discuss “Cockroach in a Ghost Town” on episode #171 of "For the Record."

The Thermals - Canada (single) Well it looks like it’s 2019 all over again up here. An unnecessary election reveals an almost carbon-copy of the 2019 election. Only cost us $600M+. :|
