Jack pulled his blanket over his head and groaned. Loud pop music was thumping through the wall from the apartment next to him. He cursed the day he moved into that building. This was the fourth time that week he’d lost sleep to his neighbor’s annoying disregard for people who sleep past seven in the morning. And that morning, Jack had had it. He was going to give that obnoxious idiot a piece of his mind—if he could gather his thoughts on two hours of sleep, that is.
He rolled out of bed. Not bothering to change out of his jeans and hoodie (with the hood up of course), Jack walked barefoot into the hall and hammered his fist on the door. The music stopped and he heard a high-pitched voice call, “Coming!!”
The door flung open and Jack was extremely surprised by the attractive brunette (a/n: post movie haircut) standing at the door. Her bright green eyes were much too excited for the early hour. He saw her cheeks turn pink at the sight of him. “Oh, hi! I think I’ve seen you around here before, but I never quite caught your name! I’m Rapunzel!”
“Jack,” he mumbled. “Listen, can you… not blast your stereo before noon? I live next door and I don’t get in until 2 A.M. most days.”
Rapunzel gasped. “Oh dear, I had no idea! I’m so sorry, I can absolutely do that! Listen, if you need anything else, just text me or something, okay? Here’s my number—“
She haphazardly pulled a pink gel pen from her pocket and scribbled her name and phone number on the back of Jack’s hand. Still in an exhausted stupor, Jack was unable to do anything but watch her.
“Again, if there’s anything you need, alright?”
Jack laughed quietly. “Yeah, okay. Thanks, um…” He looked at his hand having already forgotten her name. “…Rapunzel.”
She giggled. “Not a problem! Bye!”
Jack returned to his apartment feeling accomplished. He got the gorgeous girl’s number without even asking! He could barely stand how sweet she was. He could also barely stand seeing as he was so tired, so he collapsed back into bed and woke up at about 1, the best sleep he’d gotten all that week. He picked his phone up off his bedside table and put in Rapunzel’s number.
JF: hey, its ur neighbor Jack. thnks for turning off the music. I just woke up lol
RC: (ﾉ◕ヮ◕)ﾉ*:・ﾟ✧ Wonderful!!! Totally putting your number in my phone right now :3
JF: k cool.
RC: See you later!
RC: PS. If you don’t wanna say Rapunzel all the time you can just call me Punz or Zel—most people do
Jack laughed and put “Punz” as her nickname in her contact.
JF: gotcha (thumbs up emoji)
Jack knew this was going to be a very interesting friendship—if not more, he hoped.
~ * two weeks later * ~
Jack squinted at his phone as he crossed the parking lot, going back to his car after a long night at work. The time was 1:44 A.M., and as he turned on his car, he got a text.
RC: Hey um
RC: You’re up right?
JF: leaving work now
JF: whats up?
RC: Um
RC: Would you mind picking me up some Ibuprofen?
JF: …
JF: u know I work at CVS right
RC: Um
RC: Yeah
RC: ｜−・;）
JF: lol it’s k
JF: i’ll be back there in 10 k?
RC: Thank you so much!!
JF: np
JF: do u need anything else
RC: …do they carry Fast Breaks?
JF: those caramel reeses things?
RC: Yesyesyesyesyes
JF: geez haha, yeah i can get those too
RC: Thank youuuuuu
Jack laughed aloud and ran back into the store to grab her stuff.
When he returned to the building he knocked on Rapunzel’s door quietly.
Rapunzel answered the door in a baggy pair of grey sweatpants and a pink off-the-shoulder sweater. She smiled with relief and took the plastic bag from Jack’s outstretched hand.
“Thank you so much, I totally owe you.”
Jack chuckled. “No problem Punz.”
He turned to go back to his apartment, when Rapunzel stopped him.
“Hey, Jack—“
Jack turned around again and saw Rapunzel blushing.
“Um, well, this might be a little impulsive, but um… do you wanna, like, go out some time?”
Jack blushed too, and it showed much more obviously on his pale cheeks. “S-Sure!”
Rapunzel beamed. “Fantastic! You off work soon? I don’t want you to be too tired for work if we go out earlier in the day.”
Jack rubbed the back of his neck and laughed. “Yeah. Um, I don’t work on weekends.”
“Great! Saturday night?”
“Sure.”
“Great! See you later?”
“Yep.”
Rapunzel let out a big sigh. “Awesome.”
She went back into her apartment and Jack stood staring at the door in a bit of a daze.
“Oh boy…”
