--------------
Lowtown became a memory, swallowed by the darkness of the Deep Roads— an ancient labyrinth of stone and filth, the air thick with centuries of rot, the silence punctuated by the steady drip of water in the dark.
Katica moved cautiously, lingering at the edges of the procession, just a shadow among shadows as the Deep Roads closed in. The press of the earth above felt immense, every breath heavy and humid in her lungs, the cold shifting to heat and back again as the days slowly passed. Lanterns burned low, their weak light smeared across the walls, doing little to stave off the darkness. The sound of boots on gravel blended with the distant skittering across stone and the constant prickle of dread.
They ate in the dark, hands stiff from work, ration biscuits gritty and tasteless. No one spoke of home, not really— just muttered about pay, about ghosts, about shadows flickering at the edge of the light. Bartrand was a storm of impatience, every mistake a personal affront, every minute spent shoring up a tunnel another cost carved into his brow. He drove the miners hard, their bodies hunched under loads that seemed heavier with each passing day.
Katica kept her watch in silence, eyes sweeping the tunnels, head down, letting the others fill the quiet with their exhaustion and worry. She barely spoke, and every night she felt the Veil thinning, the press of Malice inside growing louder, bolder— a constant pulse beneath every thought.
Another Draw-a-long with @thehangedmancreatives ! This time I settled on one of my Antivan Crow OCs, Katica Basri.
