you and bakugou katsuki made no sense.
that was the general answer.
he was loud. explosive. sharp around the edges in a way that made teachers sigh and students flinch. he argued like it was breathing. laughed like it was a challenge. walked through the halls like he dared the world to say something to his face.
and then there was you.
you sat by the window in class, knees tucked in, sleeves pulled over your hands even when it wasn’t cold. you spoke softly, if at all. when teachers called on you, your voice never rose above what it needed to be, but you always had the right answer, you were someone people always went to you when they needed reassurance.
sweet. introverted. gentle.
but people didn’t get it.
“seriously?” mina whispered one day at lunch, watching the way bakugou leaned back in his chair, questioning at kaminari over a game on his phone. “your bakugous girlfriend?”
you smiled politely, stirring your drink. “uh–yeah.”
mina blinked. “but you’re so… quiet.”
you shrugged. “is that bad.”
sero snorted from across the table. “no offense,” he said quickly, raising his hands, “but i kinda thought bakugou would go for someone who could keep up with him.”
you tilted your head. “keep up how?”
“like,” sero searched for the word, “yknow, argue back. yell. match his energy.”
“that sounds exhausting,” you said softly, unsure on where this is going.
jirou glanced at you, curious. “doesn’t he overwhelm you?”
you paused just long enough for the question to land.
“sometimes he’s loud,” you admitted. you looked back toward bakugou, who was now swearing loudly because kaminari cheated. “but he’s not overwhelming.”
mina frowned. “really?”
you shook your head. “he doesn’t pretend.” right?
sero leaned back. “still. you’re so quiet.”
you shrugged. “i don’t think being quiet means i’m weak.”
no one said anything after that.
mina watched you for a moment longer, expression softer now. “does it ever bother you? what people say?”
you blinked. “what people say?”
she hesitated. “that you two don’t… match.”
you smiled again, trying to look like everything was fine. “opposites attract, right?”
they shrugged it off, but it wasn’t the same as before.
because this time, you were unsure.
obviously you wouldn’t care if some random said all of that to you, but these were your friends and as you glanced back at bakugou—loud, unapologetic, entirely himself—you wondered, just for a moment, if they were right.
—
you weren’t sure how to feel.
it crept in slowly.
it was the way girls laughed a little louder when bakugou walked by, voices pitched higher, eyes lingering too long. the way they leaned closer to him in the halls, shoulders brushing, hands hovering like they were testing boundaries he never invited. the way they talked too much, filled the space with noise, with confidence.
and then there was the look people gave you afterward.
not unkind. just curious.
like they were comparing. like they were trying to figure out what he saw in you.
you felt it in the pauses. in the glances that lingered half a second too long. in the way conversations quieted when you approached, then resumed once you were gone.
you heard things.
not directly. never to your face.
it was whispers in the locker room you passed by too slowly. laughter from behind you in the hall. voices you recognized but pretended not to.
“they don’t match.”
“he’s gonna get bored.”
“she’s too soft for him.”
the words stuck to you, clung in places you couldn’t shake loose.
you tried to tell yourself it didn’t matter. that bakugou chose you every day. that he walked you to class without being asked. that he waited outside your classroom even when it earned him detention. that his hand always found yours in crowded spaces like it was instinct.
you started second guessing yourself in small ways. wondering if you should speak louder. laugh more. take up space instead of folding into it. you practiced responses in your head and then swallowed them back down.
he loved you as you were.
you just weren’t sure the world believed you were enough.
you never told him.
because you didnt want to sound weak, play into those accusations people made about you. but they were right.
and you were afraid that if you told him, he’d turn his anger outward; start fights, make things worse.
or worse,
that he’d look at you and realize what everyone else seemed to see.
so you moved past it.
you stayed gentle.
you held his hand and told yourself that loving him quietly didn’t make your love any smaller.
even if, some days, you felt like you were shrinking.
like everyone was right, you weren’t suitable for each other
—
however bakugou himself was already aware of it.
the little murmurs from random strangers, hushed but never quiet enough. people whispering how they felt “sorry for you.” others wondering—out loud sometimes—how the both of you even ended up together in the first place. it was common, really. everyone knew katsuki bakugou never cared for relationships, never cared for romance, never cared for anything that wasn’t loud, explosive, or useful.
so when people saw you with him, they assumed things.
bakugou never paid it any mind. he brushed it off like background noise, teeth clicking in annoyance as he claimed they were just sticking their noses where they didn’t belong. extras.
but you?
you heard everything.
and slowly, it got to you.
you became unsure. unsure of whether everyone else was right. unsure if the two of you were just some pity couple that people shook their heads at, waiting for the inevitable fallout. unsure if you were just something temporary—something bakugou would eventually grow tired of.
you didn’t say anything, though. you never spoke it out loud. never told him how the comments lingered in your head long after they were said.
instead, you swallowed it.
like that one time you all were in the living room of the dorms, you and your friend group playing some game, you weren’t listening out for the name.
“sero your cheatingg.” mina whined, grabbing a extra stack of cards to add to her pity collection.
“get better!” sero winked, running around the room once he claimed he was close to winning.
bakugou huffed, shuffling his cards roughly. “hurry it up.”
“ohhh,” mina said, eyes lighting up. “this round’s gonna be good you guys suck!”
“pfttt you imagine” sero replied easily.
“shut up!.”
“your turn,” jirou said again, softer this time turning towards you.
you nodded, placing a card down without looking at anyone. it worked this time, but there was no satisfaction in it. no smile.
bakugou’s fingers tightened around his own cards.
he tried to focus on the game. he really did. but every time he glanced over, you were quieter. still fidgeting. still not meeting anyone’s eyes.
“you okay?” mina asked suddenly, pausing mid-shuffle. her tone was lighter than before, but there was a crease of concern between her brows. “your quieter than usual”
you hesitated. just for a second. “yeah. just tired.”
“you sure?” kirishima added. “we can stop if—”
“no,” you said quickly, a little too quickly. “it’s fine.”
bakugou’s gaze snapped to you.
“uh… you’re up,” jirou said, tapping the table in front of you.
you blinked, glancing down at your cards like they were unfamiliar. “oh—sorry.”
you placed one down, hesitating.
“…that doesn’t work,” jirou added.
you quietly pulled it back. “right. my bad.”
he slammed a card down harder than necessary. “pay attention.”
the table rattled slightly.
you flinched this time.
it was subtle, barely noticeable—but he caught it.
your shoulders tensed, and you muttered a quiet apology even though he hadn’t been talking directly to you.
that made his chest twist uncomfortably.
another round passed.
you lost again.
you simply gathered your cards, stacking them neatly instead of tossing them aside like you usually did.
“i think i’m gonna sit this one out,” you said softly. “just gonna watch.”
that was it.
bakugou straightened instantly.
watching wasn’t something you ever chose.
as mina and sero argued over the next deal, bakugou leaned forward.
mina was in the middle of dealing again, flicking them out with practiced ease. “okay, okay, last round for real this time—”
“no.”
bakugou’s voice cut through the room, sharp and final.
everyone froze.
mina blinked. “uh… no?”
bakugou leaned forward, planting his hands on the coffee table. the cards scattered, slipping out of place. his red eyes were locked on you, jaw set so tight it looked like it might crack.
“game’s over,” he said. “we’re done.”
sero stared at him. “dude, what? we just started again.”
“yeah, man,” kirishima added carefully. “what’s the big deal?”
bakugou didn’t even look at them.
bakugou was still standing there, arms tense at his sides, eyes fixed on you like he was waiting for you to vanish if he blinked.
you shifted where you sat, uncomfortable under his stare. “…katsuki?”
that was all you said.
his jaw clenched.
then, without another word, he reached down and grabbed your hand.
“c’mon.”
you barely had time to react before he was already pulling you up, his grip secure but not rough. your heart jumped as you stumbled slightly, forced to your feet.
“wait what?” you asked, trying to keep up as he dragged you toward the door.
“my room,” he said shortly. “now.”
he didn’t look back to see if you were okay, he didn’t need to. he adjusted his hold instead, fingers sliding to lace with yours properly, grounding you as he led you out into the hallway.
the dorm was quiet at this hour, the echo of your footsteps loud against the floor. bakugou’s pace was fast, purposeful, but not angry. more like he was done letting things sit.
you glanced at his profile, the familiar scowl softened just a fraction.
“…you didn’t have to stop the game,” you murmured.
he huffed. “yeah. i did.”
his door came into view.
bakugou pushed it open, tugging you inside without ceremony, and the door shut behind you with a solid click.
and for the first time all night, he loosened his grip just enough to look at you.
the door slammed shut behind you.
bakugou didn’t turn around right away. he stood there with his back to you, hands clenched at his sides, shoulders tense like he was holding something back.
“…the hell is wrong with you.”
not yelled. not calm either. rough. scraped out of his throat.
you flinched.
“you’ve been acting like this for days,” he continued, finally turning around. his glare wasn’t explosive: it was sharp, frustrated, almost pissed at himself. “you go quiet, you stop looking at me, and then you sit there like you’re waiting for something bad to happen.”
you opened your mouth.
nothing came out.
bakugou scoffed. “yeah. figures.”
he paced once, dragging a hand through his hair hard enough to mess it up further. “say something. anything. you don’t just shut down like that for no reason.”
“…katsuki”
“don’t ‘katsuki’ me,” he snapped, pointing at you. “if i did something, say it. if someone else did something, say that too. but don’t just-” he cut himself off, jaw tightening. “don’t disappear on me.”
your chest tightened painfully.
you tried to breathe through it. tried to swallow it down like you always did.
your eyes blurred.
bakugou noticed immediately.
“…are you seriously crying right now?”
the words came out harsh, but there was panic under them.
you shook your head, lifting a hand to your face like you could physically push the tears back in. your shoulders trembled once.
that was it.
“shit—” bakugou growled.
he crossed the room in two steps and grabbed your wrist; not rough, but not gentle either, yanking your hand away from your face.
“don’t do that,” he said, voice low and sharp. “don’t hide it.”
you broke.
your breath hitched, tears spilling over as your head dropped forward. no sobs. just quiet, uncontrollable shaking like everything finally gave up.
bakugou froze for half a second.
“…dammit.”
he pulled you up by the arm and sat you down harder than necessary on the bed before dropping in front of you. his hands landed on your knees, grip firm, grounding, like he was keeping you from floating away.
“i don’t know how to deal with this,” he said bluntly. “so don’t expect me to say the right thing.”
your shoulders shook harder.
“but you don’t get to sit there thinking you’re a problem and not tell me,” he continued, voice rougher now. “you’re not subtle. i noticed.”
your breathing broke completely at that.
bakugou cursed under his breath and leaned forward, pressing his forehead against yours for just a second before pulling you into his chest.
it wasn’t gentle.
it was tight. possessive. his arms locked around you like he was daring the world to try something.
“if someone made you feel like you don’t belong with me,” he muttered, teeth clenched, “i’ll blow their shit up.”
you clutched his shirt, crying silently into it.
“and if it’s your own head messing with you,” he added, voice dropping even lower, “then you should’ve said something instead of letting it eat you alive.”
his hand came up, gripping your side not to hurt, just firm, anchoring you there.
you didn’t answer right away.
bakugou could feel your breathing against his chest, uneven, stuttering, like you were fighting yourself. his grip stayed firm, one arm locked around your back, the other still curled at your neck like he was making sure you stayed right there.
“say it,” he muttered. “whatever it is.”
your fingers twisted tighter in his shirt.
“…people keep saying stuff,” you finally managed, voice barely there.
bakugou stiffened. “what people.”
you swallowed hard. your throat burned. “just—people. in the halls. during training. even on random hero blogs.”
his jaw clenched so hard it clicked.
“they say they feel sorry for me,” you continued, words tumbling out now that you’d started. “like i’m… like i’m some kind of charity case.”
your voice cracked.
“they say you don’t do relationships. that you never cared. that it won’t last.”
bakugou’s grip tightened.
“that i’m just… convenient,” you whispered. “that we’re a pity couple. that you’ll get bored or angry or realize i’m not worth the effort.”
your breath hitched violently. “and i know you don’t listen to them..but i do. and i started wondering if they’re right.”
silence.
heavy. dangerous.
bakugou slowly pulled back just enough to look at you, red eyes burning into yours.
“…that’s what’s been eating at ya?” he asked, voice low and sharp.
you nodded, tears spilling over again. “i didn’t want to say it. i didn’t want to sound stupid.”
“stupid?” he snapped.
he let go of your neck only to grab your face, rough hands cupping your cheeks, forcing you to look at him.
your lip trembled.
“if i didn’t want you,” he continued, voice edged with anger, “you wouldn’t be here. i wouldn’t touch you. i wouldn’t drag your ass into my room and shut the door.”
his forehead pressed hard against yours.
“you think i let people see me like this?” he muttered. “you think i let anyone get this close?”
you shook your head weakly.
“exactly,” he said. “so don’t ever think you’re some temporary thing.”
his thumb brushed roughly under your eye, wiping away tears without being gentle about it.
“and next time,” he added, voice still rough, “you tell me when people run their mouths. because i’m not letting them get in your head like that.”
his arms wrapped around you again, tight and unyielding.
“you’re with me because i chose you,” he said. “and i don’t choose halfway.”
you stayed pressed against him, forehead tucked to his chest, listening to the steady thrum of his heartbeat. his arms were still wrapped around you, rough and firm, like he was daring the world to touch you.
“…you okay?” he muttered, his voice low and gravelly.
you nodded against him. “yeah…” a soft exhale, almost a sigh. “i’m okay.”
bakugou huffed, one hand sliding up awkwardly to rest on your head, thumb brushing through your hair like it cost him effort he’d never admit. “good,” he muttered.
you tilted your head, letting him tug you a little closer. “…you’re not mad?”
“mad?” he scoffed, a grin tugging at the corner of his mouth, rough but genuine. “…not at you.” he pressed his forehead against yours, leaning down just enough that you could feel the weight of him holding you in place. “idiot.”
you laughed quietly, soft and warm, the sound vibrating against him. he didn’t respond with words, just tightened his hold, and you felt the tension of the world outside melt away.
then, almost imperceptibly, he leaned down and pressed a rough, quick kiss to the top of your head. “…love ya.” he murmured, voice low.
you moved closer, smiling against him. “i know,” you whispered.
he grunted softly, like he couldn’t help himself, and tightened his arm once more, resting his chin atop your head. “…don’t ever be stupid again,”
