●A peaceful summery day in Iizaka Onsen
Fukushima is known for its fruit, particularly its peaches, so when I was invited to go on a tour of Iizaka Onsen (Hot spring) that included a stop at a peach orchard, I jumped at the chance.
Before we visited the orchard, we stopped at a rice field that was starting to flower and needed to be protected from birds that would try to eat the rice. A few scarecrows made by children at local junior high schools already adorned the field, so our job was to string bamboo poles with CDs tied to them around the perimeter so that the birds would be deterred by the reflection of the sunlight in the CDs.
Our next stop was a peach orchard, where we got to pick and eat two different kinds of peaches. The peaches were juicy and sweet, and eating them in the orchard we had just picked them from contributed to the peaceful, summery atmosphere.
After a delicious lunch of katsu curry (sweetened with more Fukushima peaches!), we relaxed in a refreshing hot spring bath, and then got dressed in colorful yukata. A photographer accompanied us around the town of Iizaka, taking pictures of us in front of the beautiful scenery of Iizaka and even a traditional Japanese house!
The pictures will always be a reminder of not just the unique experiences I had on this tour, but also of the kindness of all of the people we met, from the organizers of the tour to the staff at the onsen who helped us put on our yukata, to the shamisen players who played a concert for us and then allowed us to try playing the shamisen for ourselves. I am very grateful to have been included in this tour of Iizaka Onsen and I hope I can meet these wonderful people again someday!

福島は果物、特に桃で有名ですが、私はこの桃の果樹園が行程に含まれている飯坂温泉のツアーに誘われた時には、思わず飛びつきました。
果樹園に立ち寄る前に、私たちは稲の花が咲き始めて、鳥たちからの食害防止が必要となっている田んぼに行きました。地元の中学生たちが作ったかかしが既に据えられていましたので、私たちは鳥たちが太陽の反射を嫌って田んぼに来ないようにするために、CDが紐づけられた竹竿を周囲に並べました。
私たちは次に桃の果樹園に向かいました。そこで私たちは２種類の桃を摘み取りました。桃はとてもジューシーで甘く、そこで摘み取ったばかりの桃を食べていると、平和な夏の気分に浸ることができました。
（福島の桃で甘く味付けがされた）おいしいカツカレーを食べた後、私たちは気持ちよく温泉浴をしてリフレッシュしました。そしてその後、カラフルな浴衣に着替えました。写真家の方が飯坂町歩きに同行し、日本の伝統家屋も含めた素晴らしい景色のなかで私たちの写真を撮ってくれました。
この写真は今後いつも、私がこのツアーで経験したユニークな体験を思い出させてくれるとともに、私たちがあった親切な人々、ツアーの企画してくれた人や浴衣の着用を手伝ってくれた飯坂温泉のスタッフの方々、コンサートで三味線を弾いてくれて三味線の試し弾きをさせてくれた方々を思い出させてくれるでしょう。私はこの飯坂温泉ツアーに加えていただいて大変うれしく思っています。そしてまた、いつかまたこの素敵な方々に会えたらいいなと思っています。
