●A peaceful summery day in Iizaka Onsen
Fukushima is known for its fruit, particularly its peaches, so when I was invited to go on a tour of Iizaka Onsen (Hot spring) that included a stop at a peach orchard, I jumped at the chance.
Before we visited the orchard, we stopped at a rice field that was starting to flower and needed to be protected from birds that would try to eat the rice. A few scarecrows made by children at local junior high schools already adorned the field, so our job was to string bamboo poles with CDs tied to them around the perimeter so that the birds would be deterred by the reflection of the sunlight in the CDs.
Our next stop was a peach orchard, where we got to pick and eat two different kinds of peaches. The peaches were juicy and sweet, and eating them in the orchard we had just picked them from contributed to the peaceful, summery atmosphere.
After a delicious lunch of katsu curry (sweetened with more Fukushima peaches!), we relaxed in a refreshing hot spring bath, and then got dressed in colorful yukata. A photographer accompanied us around the town of Iizaka, taking pictures of us in front of the beautiful scenery of Iizaka and even a traditional Japanese house!
The pictures will always be a reminder of not just the unique experiences I had on this tour, but also of the kindness of all of the people we met, from the organizers of the tour to the staff at the onsen who helped us put on our yukata, to the shamisen players who played a concert for us and then allowed us to try playing the shamisen for ourselves. I am very grateful to have been included in this tour of Iizaka Onsen and I hope I can meet these wonderful people again someday!

福島は果物、特に桃で有名ですが、私はこの桃の果樹園が行程に含まれている飯坂温泉のツアーに誘われた時には、思わず飛びつきました。
果樹園に立ち寄る前に、私たちは稲の花が咲き始めて、鳥たちからの食害防止が必要となっている田んぼに行きました。地元の中学生たちが作ったかかしが既に据えられていましたので、私たちは鳥たちが太陽の反射を嫌って田んぼに来ないようにするために、CDが紐づけられた竹竿を周囲に並べました。
私たちは次に桃の果樹園に向かいました。そこで私たちは２種類の桃を摘み取りました。桃はとてもジューシーで甘く、そこで摘み取ったばかりの桃を食べていると、平和な夏の気分に浸ることができました。
（福島の桃で甘く味付けがされた）おいしいカツカレーを食べた後、私たちは気持ちよく温泉浴をしてリフレッシュしました。そしてその後、カラフルな浴衣に着替えました。写真家の方が飯坂町歩きに同行し、日本の伝統家屋も含めた素晴らしい景色のなかで私たちの写真を撮ってくれました。
この写真は今後いつも、私がこのツアーで経験したユニークな体験を思い出させてくれるとともに、私たちがあった親切な人々、ツアーの企画してくれた人や浴衣の着用を手伝ってくれた飯坂温泉のスタッフの方々、コンサートで三味線を弾いてくれて三味線の試し弾きをさせてくれた方々を思い出させてくれるでしょう。私はこの飯坂温泉ツアーに加えていただいて大変うれしく思っています。そしてまた、いつかまたこの素敵な方々に会えたらいいなと思っています。

●Delights of Iizaka
On August the 5th, I was lucky enough to take part in a peach picking tour in Iizaka Onsen (hot spring).
We started the day by hanging CDs in a local rice field to discourage birds from eating the local crops.
We were helped by some adorable local children.
Next, we headed to a nearby orchard to pick some of the most delicious peaches that I’ve ever eaten.
Not yet full from our peaches, we headed to a local café for an amazing specialist takes on Katsu curry (pork cutlet with curry). Both the curry and fried chicken were fantastic.
After lunch and a quick dip in the onsen, we put on some beautiful yukatas and had our photos taken by a professional photographer, an experience which was new and exciting to the whole group.
After a fascinating shamisen performance, we celebrated with a couple of drinks with many of the local people that we had met that day.
Overall it was a wonderful and fun day, full of pampering and delicious food. I feel very privileged to have experienced the delights of Iizaka.

８月５日、私は幸運にも飯坂温泉での桃狩りツアーに参加することができました。
その日は、鳥たちがお米を食べないようにするためのＣＤを田んぼにつるすところから始まりました。
地元のかわいらしい子どもたちが手伝ってくれました。
次に私たちはこれまで食べたことがないようなとてもおいしい桃を摘み取るためにと果樹園に向かいました。
食べた桃でおなかがまだいっぱいにならない間に、私たちは素晴らしいカツカレーのスペシャリストがいる地元のカフェにむかいました。カレーも、から揚げも（注：から揚げは近所の精肉店のものです）素晴らしかったです。
昼食の後、温泉にちょっと浸かった後、私たちは浴衣を着て、プロのカメラマンの方に写真を撮ってもらいました。これはみんなにとってとても斬新でわくわくするような体験でした。
魅惑的な三味線演奏を聴いた後、私たちはその日の昼間お会いした方々と何杯か酌み交わしながら交流しました。
総じて、満足できるおいしい食べ物に満ちた、素敵で楽しい一日でした。私は飯坂のすばらしいものを経験できてとても得したような気分です。

ふくしまの食べ物入門（第3弾）
●Korokke (Croquette)
Many years ago, one of the western dishes, croquette was introduced to Japan and then Japanese people arranged it in Japanese way. It’s a kind of deep-fried food. It contains boiled mashed potato with minced meat and onion. The surface of it is covered with crispy breadcrumbs. We cook it at home and it’s also available at meat shops and supermarkets in Japan. Stacey and her friends ate Korokke cooked by “Kawamata-Syokunikuten (meat shop)” in Iizaka, Fukushima this time. If you go to “Kawamata-Syokunikuten”, you can have Karaage (Japanese style deep-fried chicken) as well as Korokke.

コロッケ
西洋料理のクロケットが日本式にアレンジされた揚げ物料理。すりつぶしたジャガイモと茹でたひき肉や玉ねぎを混ぜたものにパン粉でまぶしてあげたものです。一般家庭で作られているほか、精肉店やスーパーマーケットで売られています。今回ステーシーたちが食べたコロッケは飯坂温泉の川又食肉店のものです。ここでは揚げたてコロッケのほか、揚げたてのから揚げも食べることことができます。

ふくしまの食べ物入門（第１弾）
Hello, this is Ken, administrator of this blog.
In some articles about the rice planting event in Iizaka, some of Fukushima local foods are mentioned by participants, so I believe many of you are now interested in them.
Here, I would love to explain about details of a couple of those unique foods.

今回の飯坂温泉での田植えイベントに関する記事の中には、いくつか福島の食に関する記述がありましたが、今回そのうちいくつかについて少し詳しく説明したいと思います。
● Enban-gyoza (Dumplings arranged and broiled in a disc shape)
You can find gyoza (dumplings) anywhere in Japan but gyoza in Fukushima is a bit different from others. Specifically, it’s arranged in a disc shape and the texture is crispy.
Allegedly, Some people who came back from the northeastern part of China after the Second World War started serving this type of gyoza in our hometown, Fukushima.
Anyway, we have a bunch of marvelous gyoza restaurants in Fukushima.

円盤餃子
日本のどこでも餃子を食べることができますが、福島の餃子の特徴は円盤型に並べられて調理されていることと食感がサクサクしていることです。一説によれば戦後、中国の東北部から帰ってきた人たちが作り始めたと言われています。福島市内に円盤餃子の名店がたくさんあります。

I’m “Mr. Yasu”, a tour guide of Iizaka onsen,Fukushima city.
It was really fun to walk around Iizaka town with Assistant language teachers and members of Fukushima Kenpoku Development Bureau.
No matter where you are in the world, you are pursuing happiness, pleasure. And we can share the feeling.
I don’t care what is called the language barrier. I am confident we can overcome it.

言葉の壁なんてへっちゃらさ！
Iizaka Onsen is always a place I want to visit, but often, don’t have time for. I was very happy when I was invited to go with other ALTs and visit the onsen (hot spring) town. It’s so close to Fukushima City that I want to go more: thirty minutes on a train is very easy. Often, I think I forget I live so close to such a special place, but this Saturday, I was reminded that sometimes, the best things are close to where we live. We don’t always have to travel far to enjoy something really special.
There was no better day to plant rice than last Saturday. The sun was very bright, and the view of the rice fields was beautiful. So many people were at the event. The best was seeing so many children: they had so much fun! I think it's great that children get to have special experiences like this in their hometowns. They made the event even more fun as we all worked to plant rice. Although I was afraid of frogs and didn’t go into the rice paddy, I enjoyed passing out rice plant and talking to locals. Everyone was happy to have me there working alongside them. I was reminded, again, that everyone in Fukushima is ready to welcome anyone who wants to try something new.. In fact, I felt like a local in my sun hat and tabi socks!
Looking out at the rice paddy that we helped plant, I am reminded that Fukushima is a very special place. For me, it’s one of the most important places in Japan, not because it has big cities or is popular, but because it is a welcoming place. Fukushima has many hard workers, and many people who enjoy sharing the fruits of their labor. Whether it’s the gyoza（dumplings） we enjoyed at a mochi(rice cake) and sake party that night, the sento(public bath) that helped ease our aches from hard work, or the rice we’ll enjoy in a few months, Fukushima Prefecture is a place that always welcomes everyone.
Best of all, I got to spend the day with my favorite local celebrity, Mr. Yasu. If Iizaka Onsen needed a mascot, I’d pick Mr. Yasu. I'd buy any merchandise of him too! His kindness, good humor, and love of Iizaka would make anyone want to make time to relax in the sento or go and sightsee. He makes me feel excited about Iizaka: I will certainly visit again in June to relax at a new sento, and visit some of the specialty stores Mr. Yasu showed us. His enthusiasm is very infectious, and he always makes me smile!
Iizaka, rice, and sake are important to Fukushima. They bring us happiness, fill out stomachs, and provide us with a way to relax. Being able to enjoy all three of those things last Saturday reminded me that Fukushima City really is my home now, and that I want to keep enjoying every part of it. I want to help grow and take care of the rice we eat and the sake we drink. I can’t wait to take a drink of the next batch of sake and remember helping create it. I think that will be a very special memory for me.

飯坂温泉にはいつも行きたいと思っています。でもなかなか行く時間がありません。ほかの英語指導助手と一緒に飯坂温泉を訪れた時はとてもうれしかったです。飯坂温泉は福島市の中心地からも近いのでもっと行きたい場所です。電車で30分というのはとても手軽です。いつも私はそんな特別な場所の近くに住んでいることを忘れています。でも、先週の土曜日、時に最高のものはすごく近くにあるのだということを痛感しました。何か本当に特別な体験をするために、私たちは必ずしも遠くまで旅をする必要はないのです。
先週の土曜日ほど田植えにふさわしい日はなかったと思います。太陽はとても明るく、田んぼの風景も本当にきれいでした。ほんとうにたくさんの人たちがイベントに参加しました。最高だったのは子どもたちを多く見かけたこと。子どもたちもはしゃいでいました。子どもたちにとっても、ふるさとでこんな特別な体験ができるなんて素敵だと思います。子たちが私たちの田植えの作業をさらに楽しくしてくれました。私はカエルが怖くて、田んぼの中に入ることができませんでしたが、苗を渡したり、地元の人たちとお話しして楽しく過ごしました。私が横で働くのを、みんなよろこんでくれました。ここでもまた、ふくしまの人たちは、何か新しく何かをしたいという人をよろこんで迎えてくれることを痛感しました。実際、私は日よけ防止をかぶり、足袋を履いて、なんだか地元の人になった気分でした！
私たちがお手伝いした田んぼを見ながら、私はふくしまが特別な場所だということを感じました。私にとって、日本のなかで最も重要な場所の一つです。それは大きな都市がいっぱいあるからでも、人気があるからでもなく、気さくな場所だからです。ふくしまには本当に一生懸命働いている人がいて、多くの人がその労働の成果をほかの人と共有しようとしてくれます。餅と日本酒のパーティで食べたギョウザにしても、お手伝いで疲れた体を癒してくれた共同浴場にしても、数か月後に楽しむことになる日本酒にしても、福島県はいつも温かくみんなを迎え入れてくれるところです。何といっても、私がこの日を一緒に過ごした地元の有名人の「ヤスさん」（畑中靖さん）。もし飯坂温泉にマスコットが必要だとしたら、私は「ヤスさん」を選びます。私はヤスさんグッズも買いますよ！彼の優しさ、ユーモア、そして飯坂に対する愛が誰しもを、リラックスするために共同浴場に駆り立て、また観光に駆り立てるでしょう。彼は私の飯坂旅行をすごく盛り上げてくれました。私は、６月になったら絶対にまた飯坂にいって、また別の共同浴場でリラックスして、彼が見せてくれた素敵なお店に行きます。かれの熱意はこちらにも伝わるし、いつも笑わせてくれます！
飯坂、お米、そして日本酒はふくしまにとって重要です。それらは私たちを幸せにしてくれ、おなかをいっぱいにしてくれ、リラックスする方法を与えてくれます。それら３つのすべてを楽しむことができた先週末は、福島市が今や私にとってほんとにふるさとなんだと感じさせてくれました。そして福島市のすべてのことを楽しんでいきたいと感じさせてくれました。私は私たちが食べるお米や日本酒の成長や管理のお手伝いをしたいです。私は新しくできるお酒を試飲することも、お酒造りのお手伝いをしたことを思い出すことも待ちきれません。それは本当に特別な体験になると思います。
