I’ve been working on these monotypes for QUILT/NOT QUILT. Each monotype is printed on paper made from worn out and discarded quilts. The particular patterns of each print pay homage to several quilts that were taken apart and transformed for this project. A traveling group exhibition will open this October at Minnesota Center for Book Arts.

I am excited to share the news that Katy Collier will be visiting us this coming fall 2016 semester as Roman J. Witt Visiting Artist. -Endi

Katy Collier is a Minneapolis-based artist who works in multiple disciplines including print media, drawing, animation and text. Her work has been shown throughout the United States including at the Hyde Park Art Center, Highpoint Center for Printmaking, Women’s Studio Workshop, and, most recently, at Detroit Artists Market, the show I curated in 2014 Abstraction and Landscape: Contemporary Woodcut. Collier has taught printmaking at Spudnik Press, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Ox-Bow School of Art and Highpoint Center for Printmaking where she is currently Education Mentor in the Access/Print program, an after school program for high school students.  Her work references traditional crafts and weaving quilt patterns, and explore the influence of pastoral themes within domestic design and traditional craft practices. Collier’s printed collages recall quilts, samplers and other textiles. 

Katy Collier says about her work: “when women work–quilt, weave, or knit–the results of their labor are often viewed as a functional and emotional record of that effort within a given tradition.” 

In Collier’s work the processes of carving, printing and collaging make visible the essential role of labor in art making.
