This is the piece that started my pining for Aili’s stunning new body of work for her current exhibition with Katy Stone. It deserves a close-up. Open 1-5 today. ‘Solis’ is made with acrylic and thread on canvas and muslin over panel 72 x 48 x 3 in In honor of Hilda Lucia Solis who was the first Latina woman to serve in the US Senate, where she sought to pass environmental justice legislation. She ultimately became the first Latina woman to serve in the US Cabinet. As a congresswoman, Solis is most known for her work on environmental issues as a member of the Committee on Energy and Commerce, the Committee on Natural Resources, and the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming. The works of Aili Schmeltz and Katy Stone move between individual and collective experience, tying personal stories to shared landscape. The formal proximity of these two artists is loosely apparent, as each focuses on the tools of color and material to reexamine spatial relationships. Aili employs the narrative mediums of painted canvas, fabric dye, and thread, while Katy uses laser cut aluminum in concert with sculptural relief and shadow. This stunner by Aili Schmeltz gives all the vibes and greets you as you walk in to see our current show. ‘Cedar’ Thread, acrylic, and fabric dye on canvas and muslin over panel 60 x 48 in Done in honor of Nadia Berg — who calls herself Cedar, who lived nearly 200 feet off the ground for 11 months in Humboldt County's Nanning Creek grove. Cedar had made herself at home in a tree dubbed Grandma, a massive double redwood joined at the base. ‘Light Passage’ Oil on aluminum 42" x 56" x 2.5" By Katy Stone for her exhibition, ‘Receiver’ with Aili Schmeltz ‘My new work pulses with the organic motion of waves, of wind, of topographies.  Built with amassed gestures, my pieces evoke both the aerial and the terrestrial-- imagined terrains of the sky, the water, and the land.  These pieces represent moments of convergence, growing, reaching, and becoming, as they materialize the invisible energies in nature.   Made from laser cut aluminum or acrylic, based on gestures developed through brushed ink or digital drawings, these works are amassed in thin layers, floating off the wall in shallow relief; the shadows cast on the wall from natural and directional light are an integral aspect of each piece.’ #katystone #receiver #johanssonprojects (at Johansson Projects) https://www.instagram.com/p/Ca8WLVHp-qY/?utm_medium=tumblr

Celebrating International Women’s Day with two works done in honor of CA women by Aili Schmeltz The first done in honor of Hallie Morse Daggett (1878-1964), who was the first woman hired as a fire lookout by the United States Forest Service. She worked as a lookout for 15 years beginning in 1913 at Eddy's Gulch Lookout Station atop Klamath Peak in California’s Klamath National Forest. It was almost a hundred years later before the Forest Service appointed their first female chief Abigail R. Kimbell in 2007. The second done in honor of Judi Bari (1949 – 1997) an environmentalist and labor leader, a feminist, an anarchist and the principal organizer of Earth First! campaigns against logging in the ancient redwood forests of Northern California in the 1980s and 1990s. She also organized efforts through Earth First! – Industrial Workers of the World Local 1 to bring timber workers and environmentalists together in common cause.
