On our last full day in Kauai, we drove up the west side of the canyon to see Waimea Canyon, supposedly dubbed by Mark Twain as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific. At one of the lookout parking lots, when I got out of the car, I was greeted by a mother hen and her chicks. Most of the chickens we encountered on Kauai (they are EVERYWHERE) were a bit skittish, but this momma hen came right up to us, showing no fear.
