Kaufmann’s Department Store and its clock in downtown Pittsburgh. The store transcended itself and was a local institution, similar to Marshall Field’s in Chicago--right down to an iconic clock. Similarly the store was taken over when Macy’s spread out from its NYC base, and similarly it was not-the-same-anymore.
Kaufmann’s closed last year, although something appears to be going on inside the building, perhaps only maintenance to the building after recent fires. Rust Belt magazine has a very nice retrospective of the store here.
The clock was installed in 1913. Despite the fact that the building was vacant, people were distressed when the clock stopped working--a problem obviously remedied, since the time shown above was absolutely accurate. My photos, October 21, 2016.
If you’re interested in Kaufmann’s at all, you won’t want to miss the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s inteactive extravaganza The Kaufmann Legacy
Kaufmann's department store in Pittsburgh has closed. For 9 years as Macy's and 118 years before that as Kaufmann's "The Big Store" was a downtown fixture.
A THOUGHT OF VICTORY From God’s Word:
“To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under Heaven.”
-Ecclesiastes 3:1
This "Thought" from Pittsburgh's own, famed Kaufmann's Clock serves as a friendly reminder for you to please set your clocks ahead one hour tomorrow night in anticipation of the return of Daylight Savings Time!
100th Anniversary of Kaufmann’s Clock
Ever met someone under Kaufmann’s clock? A Pittsburgh treasure and National Historic Landmark, Kaufmann’s Clock is celebrating its 100thanniversary this weekend! Located on the corner of Fifth Avenue and Smithfield Street downtown, the clock will be the focal point for the two-day event held this Friday and Saturday.
Old-timey picture of Kaufmann’s Clock-check out that cobblestone!
What will the celebration have in store? (Pun intended: this event is being thrown by Macy’s, which took over the Kaufmann’s flagship department store—but saved the clock—in 2006.) Hundreds of Macy’s giveaways, the chance to meet Mr. Rogers’ own Mr. McFeely, and a themed street carnival, to name a few! Check out Macy’s website for the full schedule of events!
