favourite greekified version of a foreign country name that has been used by kavvadias and makes the place sound Incredibly cool
I will cheat and not answer properly because rules are made to be broken, and instead talk about my favourite place name used in Kavvadias' poems. It's Αλγέρι (Algiers) so that's:
1. a city and not a country
and
2. not greekified as that's just what we call Algiers (unlike Brazil which is Βραζιλία not Μπραζίλι)
But I decided to name that as my answer because he does mention it quite often in his poems and it always sounds so lovely and melodic. His poems that mention it are always top tier and I am not just saying that because mal du depart was my first Kavvadias poem. Actually can I change my answer to 'το Μαδράς τη Σιγκαπούρ τ’ Αλγέρι και το Σφαξ'. All four of them (i know 3/4 aren't countries).
Mario Frangoulis: FATA MORGANA
A "fata morgana" is a mirage, an optical phenomenon which results from a temperature inversion. Objects on the horizon, such as islands, cliffs, ships or icebergs, appear elongated and elevated.
A poem of: Nikos Kavvadias - Νίκος Καββαδίας Music: Mariza Koch - Μαρίζα Κωχ.
Lyrics correction: ..The capes of Gerakini and Stratoni.
Ill make my communion with seawater, Distilled from your body drop by drop, in an ancient copper cup from Algiers, As done by pirates of old before the fight.
Where are you coming from? From Babylon, Where are you going? To the eye of the cyclone. Whom do you love? A Gypsy maid, What is her name? Fata Morgana
A leather sail, all smeared with wax, Of cedar-wood reeking, of incense and varnish, Like the smell of the hold in an aging ship Built at that time on Euphrates in Phoenicia.
Where are you coming from? From Babylon, Where are you going? To the eye of the cyclone. Whom do you love? A Gypsy maid, What is her name? Fata Morgana.
Fire-hued rust in the mines of Sina, The capes of Gerakini and Stratoni That coating, that old blessed rust gave us birth, It feeds us, feeds on us, and then it kill us.
Where are you coming from? From Babylon, Where are you going? To the eye of the cyclone. Whom do you love? A Gypsy maid, What is her name? Fata Morgana.

hey! ^ ^ 1, 7 and 11 for the ask (i hope it's not too many) 🌻
Hi!
1. favourite place in your country?
Easy! The castle in Ioannina, and the promenade next to the lake!
7. three words from your native language that you like the most?
Oh so many…but top:
ἰδέρως - one who falls in love as soon as he sees something
ψυχανεμίζομαι - my soul feels something on the wind, meaning the instinctive understanding of something when no tangible evidence (yet) exists.
χαρμολύπη - the feeling of mixed and inextricable joy and sorrow
11. favourite native writer/poet?
M. Karagatsis (Μ. Καραγάτσης), author of “Junkermann”, “The Great Chimera” and “Blood Lost and Won”, is my absolutely favourite Greek writer. As for poets, it’s a toss between Constantine Cavafy and Nikos Kavvadias.
Thank you very much for the questions!
