COMPANION became the design of KAWS’s first toy in 1999, when he produced his first figure with Japanese toy and streetwear brand Bounty Hunter. The first edition of 500 sold out quickly and cemented KAWS’s place in the public eye. On the difference between toy versus sculpture, @kaws remarked: “To me they involve the same thought process, so it’s funny that when I work big in bronzes, it’s called sculpture, but something I do that’s small and plastic is called a toy.”
