N829DN, one of Delta’s Boeing 737-900ERs, throws it all out on landing at Baltimore-Washington. Delta has 130 -900ERs in its fleet with an average age of only three years- the first -900ER was delivered to Delta in September 2013 (N801DZ) and the 130th one being delivered in June 2019 (N930DZ). This particular aircraft was delivered in October 2017. N8502Z, one of Southwest’s Boeing 737-800s, gets airborne at Baltimore Washington. Of the 746 Boeing 737s in Southwest’s fleet, 207 of them are the 737-800s with an average age of 3.2 years. Southwest inaugurated its 737-800 services on 11 April 2012. This is N8711Q, Southwest’s fourth 737MAX aircraft, delivered in September 2017, at the gate at Baltimore-Washington Airport. Over the years that I have been flying into BWI, Southwest’s presence has been growing over time and it seems that there are more Southwest gates there than ever before! Someone mentioned to me that BWI is Southwest’s busiest hub, so I had go digging into the Bureau of Transportation Statistics’ datasets. Southwest accounts for 69.2% of all passengers at BWI, 17.3 million from April 2017 to March 2018. Turns out at MDW there were 20.1 million on Southwest in the same time frame. Others- LAS (17.6 mil), PHX (15.2 mil), MCO (10.7 mil), DAL (14.1 mil), HOU (11.5 mil). So then I got more curious. Biggest airline at DCA is American, 5.9 mil, and at IAD it’s United at 6.6 mil + 3.0 mil for Mesa.
