Alternate Universe: What if...Jon had died and Keenan takes on Jon's soul?

Author Note: This story I thought I would write out after a conversation with Keenan. I'm not a writer or anything so go easy on me if it's horrible. It was just for funsies! :D

The wind blew calmly today. The trees looked like trees, and birds like birds. Everything was the way he remembered it.

Keenan Moore stepped off the plane, having not seen American soil in the two years he had been away for Peace Corps, was glad to see nothing had changed.

"I wonder where he could be...He said he would pick me up. He better not show up in a fat-suit or something weird..."

Making his way outside of the terminal, with one bag in hand and a present in the other, Keenan looked around. Cars were parked everywhere. Tourists running back and fourth already taking pictures of their newly arrived destination. People were chatting loudly creating white noise for Keenan. Keenan was looking for Jon.

"I wonder...how much has Jon changed? I've learned so much in my time away, it will take the remainder of our years to properly explain it all to him. OH. WHAT SEASON IS ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT ON NOW?"

Smiling and walking, Keenan was pacing back and fourth, wondering of the joys the world he had left behind had waiting in store for him. And with that, Keenan got lost in his thoughts. He didn't hear the entrance to the airport closing and opening over and over. He didn't hear the child 10 feet away from him screaming at the cold weather that is Oregon. He didn't hear the pilot leaving the airport talking about his soon-to-be-enjoyable weekend.

I know he didn't hear these things because when I rushed out of my car to greet him, he didn't hear me shouting his name over and over. He didn't hear me shout. He didn't hear me scream. He heard the bullets, though. And he heard me fall to the ground.

I had been caught in a crossfire. A shootout at the entrance of an airport between rival gangs. Who would've thought?

"JON! FUCK. FUCKFUCKFUCK."

With bewildered eyes, Keenan had tried to run to me. Bullets were flying everywhere. Keenan took cover behind a nearby water fountain.

"JON! HANG ON. Just...fuck..JUST HANG ON ALRIGHT. I'M COMING FOR YOU."

I don't know if he heard me. I tried to shout back at him with these words in mind "It's fine! Just stay put! I'm okay! Just small wounds, man!"

All that came out was muffled sounds and gurgling. I had been lung-shot. Looking up from the ground crawling my way over to him across this field of grass...I motioned for Keenan to stay where he was. Keenan ignored the request. He lunged out only a couple of feet away from the fountain before a bullet found his shoulder. And then another bullet found his forearm. Keenan fell to his knees, and looked up at me. Staring eye to eye about 40 feet from each other, Keenan knew what my last wish was. For him to be safe. Time hadn't changed our bond, after all. We still understood each other.

Tears in his eyes, gritting his teeth, Keenan fought against his inner urges. He slowly looked up at me. I was bleeding out heavily, I had enough time to nod at him to back off. So he slowly slid his way low behind the fountain, keeping clear of bullets. He was shaking. He was crying. And he was still stupidly holding onto my present. What a happy birthday for me, huh?

It's funny.

In these moments it's surprising what your senses do to you. You don't see the apparent mobsters around you. You don't hear the bullets or the shouting or the cursing. You don't even hear them leave. You just see the one thing that matters to you. To me? That was Keenan. His safety was all that mattered. To be honest with you, there could've been much worse ways for me to die. You want to know what my last thought was?

Heh. This is how anti-heroes are born. Cool. Cool cool cool.

It was 20 minutes before the first police officer had come by. And 15 more minutes before the first ambulance. I was long gone, and Keenan had long buried his face in my lifeless chest. The medics had come and kindly told Keenan to get up from my body. He fought back violently. It had begun to rain.

Before being held back by police officers, Keenan looked at his hands covered in my blood, and then looked to my body. On my chest, the blood had made a symbol. A symbol of a skull. Keenan fought the thought. He would never...he could never be what I had always wanted to be...He couldn't take that from me, but...who would represent me now? Who would represent that wish? There was nothing to show one of my darker desires, but the memory of me telling it to Keenan.

What I had always wanted for myself should Keenan die an unfair unjust death, but wasn't allowed to. I wasn't allowed revenge. Keenan knew the thirst now. He knew how I had felt all these years. He felt the anger. He felt his blood boiling and seething in his skin.

"WAIT! Let me go. I just need to get something from his pants. Please..."

Keenan was let go, and walked over and reached into my right pocket. he found the cool hard object he was looking for. The police officer, feeling suspicious, placed his hand on his holster. Keenan turned around, object in hand. Looking up at the police officer, Keenan gave a slight maniacal smile.

"I..would never...I never would use this. I never thought I would. Never thought I would... have to. But I will. For Jon's sake...I will become...The Publisher."

Keenan held out my pen-spinning pen and pointed it to the grey sky.

"This pen...shall be the pen to reveal the universe!"

Author Note: I'm so sorry I made you guys read this. And more important, sorry to you, Keenan. I made one of my most reoccurring jokes, where I die upon your return from Peace Corps, into a written post. Once more, I'm sorry. :D
