dating em means dating someone who is constantly the center of attention in any room he walks in. you knew that before you started dating him, his reputation for being a very kind man, who was also unexplainably handsome, was a well known fact by everyone on campus. how he got along well with everyone he interacted with, unless they gave him reason to dislike them.
a generally well liked, popular guy. picture perfect!
but none of that attention matters to him. in his world, you're the center of his attention, gravity pulls him to you. his eyes find you every single time you're both in a crowded room and he's bounding over to you with a boyish grin on his face, bringing you into his warm embrace. a fiercely loyal boyfriend that everyone was envious you bagged.
"baby, wanna try this new spot on campus? it's only a six orrr seven minute walk from here," he giggles under his breath, muttering a "6-7" before showing you his phone screen, "it's your favorite~"
his warm arm around your shoulder makes you almost melt into him. it doesn't help he nuzzles his face onto the top of your head as he persuades you into saying "yes", making it look as if he's actually trying to mesh your bodies together. all while you're walking down the sidewalk, mind you.
"fine, fine, we can go," you reply, smiling as you feel him kiss your forehead, "on the condition i pay,"
he halts in his smothering before pulling away and surveying your face. then he bursts out laughing, leaning down to kiss you quickly, "oh, babe, you're funny. you almost got me with that one,"
"i'm being serious! you always pay, it doesn't even look expensive, let me cover it!"
"over my dead body," he's still laughing, his hand resting on his stomach, "'m not letting you pay, doll,"
you look away, rolling your eyes at his stubborn attitude. unfortunately, he catches sight of this and sighs. before you realize it, his hand goes up to squish your cheeks together and force you to look at him.
"don't roll your eyes at me. i just wanna take care of you," he reasons, but it all just sounds like bullshit.
"i neva peh, you zon lemme!" with your cheeks still being squished by him, the words aren't enunciated clearly, but he still understands you just fine. he shakes his head, still looking at you crazy.
"what type of boyfriend would i be if i actually let you put your card down?" his hand drops to his side, freeing you of his grip on your face.
"a very normal one! do you know how many couples i know split the bill or front for the other?"
"you really wanna pay that bad?" he asks, side eyeing you with a pout on his face, "but i really don't want you to..."
"it'll make me happy," you tell him, knowing that that would be hook, line, and sinker with him.
because if there's anything em prioritizes over everything else, it's your happiness. he huffs, glaring at you since he knows you've finally stumped him.
"fine, if it'll make you happy. don't think i'm not upset about this, though!"
"you're such a sweetheart, a stubborn, prideful sweetheart," you lean up on your tippy toes to place a kiss on his jaw, making his face heat up.

what may have been surprising when you first started dating was how strong his protectiveness really was. em just didn't seem like the type, even as you got to know him better, it just never seemed like a trait he'd have.
however, it is probably his strongest personality trait.
it shows in the way his hand lingers on the small of your back, keeping you close to him at all times. that or a heavy arm draped around your shoulder to keep you glued to his side.
it shows in how he always hovers around you when you're in public. if you run into a classmate on the street, he has an arm around you and just stares down at them. he doesn't speak unless spoken to, preferring to keep a watchful eye on them.
you mention it to him, joking that he acts as if he's your bodyguard - not your boyfriend. but he just shrugs your teasing off.
"don't want anyone trying anything," his response is swift, as if he's thought about it before.
"what? like i have enemies or something?"
he sighs, fingers playing with the waist band of your pants. they don't press further down or have any promiscuous intentions - just mindless fiddling, "i just like...watching over you. makes me feel good, knowing you're safe at all times,"
"what an endearing way of saying you're a protective freak," he smiles at your teasing, pushing up off of the bed and leaning forward to be inches away from your face.
"like you don't love it?" his voice goes deeper, eyelids half open as he zones in on your lips, "like you don't get a funny feeling in your tummy every time i linger like that?" his fingers prod at your stomach, making you squirm away. or attempt to.
he doesn't let you get far as he's leaning into a proper kiss with you in the blink of an eye. his strong arms go to wrap around your waist, resting on your back and shuffling to be in skin to skin contact with you. the warmth of his hands makes you press further into him, hands caressing his face.
"em," you're breathless and he's smirking, satisfied with the state he's left you in.
"love you, baby," he pecks you once more before laying back down as you straddle his legs.

expect a lot of silly moments with him. he grew up surrounded by goofballs that also encouraged his behavior so, serious moments are rare and recklessly foolish moments are the norm.

at the scene of the crime is your beloved boyfriend, em, and his childhood best friend, luffy. his usual partner in crime (if it wasn't ace or sabo, that is) when it comes to getting caught doing harmless pranks around campus.
this time it seems their prank was replacing the university's mascot head with another animal. your usual mascot of a lion head was now replaced with a sheep head, a mascot-headless person running after the two.
"we didn't even get to change the rest of his costume!" luffy whines, still keeping pace with em as he runs as fast as he can.
"shh! they're not supposed to know that! we could've still gotten away with it, luffy!" em scolds, "you and your big mouth!"
"hey, my mouth is normal sized!"
"ugh, what- oh! hey, doll!" heads are now snapping to look at you as em is now very, very quickly running towards you.
it would have been comical if it wasn't much more embarrassing.
your boyfriend, along with his unnaturally cheery friend luffy, were running towards you with the school mascot chasing them. in em's hands was the lion head as the mascot-wearer was holding the sheep head.
"how're you?!" he calls out, skidding to a halt and capturing your lips on his in a messy kiss, pulling away breathless from his sprint, "we are still on for tonight, right?"
"hiiiiii, [name]!" luffy exclaims, running into the backside of em's stopped form. good thing your 6'5, pure muscle boyfriend was able to withstand the impact and barely even moved.
"hi, luffy," you greet in return, your simple words making luffy's smile spread even wider. "and, uh, yeah...if you're gonna be all set by then,"
"of course, baby, wouldn't miss it for the world!"
"don't you dare run any farther, young men!" the mascot-wearer was now getting closer and em ducked down to place a kiss onto your neck, smiling into your skin.
"i'll come around half an hour earlier than we said! so 6:30, right? i'll see you then!"
and he's taking off with a luffy scrambling after him. their laughter echoes into the sky, causing onlookers to also break out into their own giggling fits. seeing your boyfriend run off with a lion mascot head held over his head makes you break out into laughter, as well.
he was a complete idiot, but at least he was yours.

I'm going to start reading Keep Safe from the beginning, because I don't remember anything about the story hahaha, but I have a question about the story: will the male reader have a romantic partner? Or will he get involved in a more intimate way? Would his partner be a male or female character? If so, I would love for the reader to have something with Zoro or Sanji, or both, but both are quite arrogant with the male reader 💔

to answer your question....i actually dont know!!!!! :33333 since i am a greedy, attention loving WHORE the concept of harems (since reader is a male, if he were a female reader it would be reverse harem) is the most appealing option to me as of right nowww. i highly doubt i will ever give him a definite boyfriend/girlfriend/partner because then that leaves him completely closed off from other options....
there are definitely some relationships i plan for him to have much more tangible tension with in comparison to the familiar faces!!! as well as simply time and the good ol slow burn, the strawhats romantic interest in [name] will start to grow more and more obvious just in a realy really really really really really slow, subtle process. keep safe is definitely a slow burn fanfic, i think. and i think that can be majorly annoying for many readers, but that's just the way that it feels "right" for me to write it as, yknow? i just can't imagine zoro or sanji or nami just falling immediately head over heels in love w their crewmate, ykwim? it is just tooooo ooc for me to be "comfortable" writing
but to talk more about the "tangible tension" relationships....for example, i plan for him and law to have a lot more tension and more "romantic" (in quotations because i'm not sure if thats the right word for what im thinking of) of a connection when they reunite/in the future in comparison to what he has with sanji and zoro. for a multitude of reasons, but it's also like, thinking realistically of zoro and sanji's characters it's going to take a while before they even begin to show romantic feelings / behaviors towards keep safe mc since he is their crewmate, not to mention theyre emotionally constipated in their own ways.
as for who his romantic interests are, it really will be everyone that i wish to include LMAO so for example, i think i'm really into the idea of leaning more in with the nami x reader dynamic since i find that one to be especially endearing, under all the layers of snarky comments and teasing. like at this point, nami is very aware of each time [name] has sacrificed a lot of himself to keep the crew - especially her - safe so she's warming up more to him and all that.

tldr: i don't play on giving you guys/the reader/keep safe mc a definite partner in the story, anytime soon, possibly ever. the strawhats x reader (romantic) is definitely going to be a very slow slow slow burn, but i will try highlighting more romantic undertone moments to not put you guys through a drought. this is still a one piece x reader fanfic afterall LAMO

when i first wrote keep safe literally years ago and had that original story published, i think my original idea was for the mc to have their powers come from a devil fruit, but thats so overpowered??? like as he is now, he is still overpowered to be honest, but im trying not to milk it and not take it so literally (considering he can very much control water in every aspect)
but when i was rewriting it this yuear, i considered the fact that this is literally the one piece universe where crazy shit happens with crazy explanations, so i kinda played off of that when i was writing and thinking about where [name] got his powers from. and also it gives him cool lore !!! so it was a win win
so i scratched the original idea and wrote an even better explanation and lore for him <3
