A lot of people say that they should try to go for the position of Director given Caine is doing who knows what, but he instead insists that he wants to be the best mechanic of the department. Along with wanting to ensure everyone knows what they're getting into.
No one is sure why the Director seems very interested in Abel, but everyone can agree that they look weirdly alike. Even more so then alternate timeline versions of the two of them... Some people are making theories, but the best guess is that they're family! Most logical option, right?
