I think your fortune cookie just predicted a cure. You better be right, cookie.
If it’s on a fortune cookie it has to be true, right? ;)
Bernie Sanders question: what do you think the deal is with his record on gun control? He wants to regulate everything except guns, which seems a little suspect to me. I *want* to like this guy. But America has a serious fucking gun problem, and the next person I vote for needs to understand that. Thoughts?
I think part of the deal is that opposing gun control helped to get him elected a long time ago. He’s from a state full of white people who like hunting.
I also think he has some valid points that Americans think that passing a law is going to stop gun crime, but that’s an overly simplistic view. That’s like thinking you’ll stop abortion by making it illegal. (That’s not a perfect analogy, but I think it’s also worth looking at all the Republicans who vote that way just because of the abortion issue, and how many people have been hurt and killed because of that. Single-issue voting is never a good idea.)
In his favor, he has opposed the sale of assault weapons, and he has never taken money from the NRA. That still puts him miles above the Republicans on gun control.
My view is that he is still the only candidate showing any interest in stopping America’s state of perpetual war. I think that in the end, that will save more lives and prevent more violence than any gun law ever could.
Ooh! I just saw that you're writing about social spiders. I'm staying in a house that has a sizable Pholcus phalangioides population. Have you found any evidence that they're even remotely social? There seems to be some sort of two-spider gang on the bathroom ceiling here. There's a big one and slightly smaller one, never more than three or four inches apart. I can't tell if they're male or female because they won't come down.
They’re certainly not eusocial, but they qualify as sub-social since the females show extended brood care through the first few molts of her offspring.
(I wanted to put a picture here of a female carrying a ball of her little spiderlings, but you guys can suffer through images like that on my social spider post instead.)
However, the spiders you’re seeing probably aren’t mother and offspring; more likely they’re a male and female that are currently courting. Sometimes a female will tolerate a male’s presence in her web for quite a while, and the size difference in P. phalangiodes sexes isn’t that large.
Some species of sub-social spiders are also known to share overlapping webs, though I don’t know if this is one of them.
keepyourpebbles said: I am a total snack hoarder. I’ve had s'mores ingredients for probably a month and finally was just like, “Pebbles, what are you waiting for? Permission?” And right now, right this minute, I’m eating stovetop s'mores.
‘Atta babe. Eat those snacks.
(Also yeah I have some decadent desserts I got for CHRISTMAS that are still in the back of my snack cabinet because I am a ridiculous human who is so fearful of running out of good things that I never let myself enjoy them.)

Oh this is AWESOME! It's a pity that finding a good Dr/Patient fit is such a rare creature, but when it does happen, it's a truly wonderful thing. I'm so happy for you <3
<3 Thank you! Especially important for spoonies and PCPs, because that's the doctor that's going to be seeing you the most and needs to be MOST on board with everything that's happening, yanno?

Congratulations, bb! A doctor who listens and really *sees* you makes all the difference in the world.
Yes! I had a doctor before who was absolutely amazing, but when he left the state I had to find a new doctor. No one has ever measured up to 'Saint Gehrlein' (as Mehuric calls him), but Dr. Pratt is well on the path to doing so.
keepyourpebbles replied to your audio post:Easily the most sarcastic folk song I have come...
Have you heard the Solas version? It’s pretty grand.
I just listened to it -- pretty! I tend to listen to folk music for the lyrics, though, and that one was a bit difficult for my hearing.
If it wasn't for the fact that he doesn't have all the lyrics, my favorite version would probably be the one by Stan Rogers. Aw, yeah, Maritime Canada, in the houseeee.
