A quick swipe of a navy blue knitted cardigan against her undereye, and she nodded a bit too quickly to be believed. Letting go of the cup, which was once filled with some sort of white soda but now only held half-melted ice, she steadied herself before opening her mouth.
“Y-Yeah,” she started, the last syllable wavering a bit. “Yes. A refill will be nice.”
How pathetic did she look to have her server ask how she was? She had been seated, expecting another person — a certain American boy she liked— and five minutes turned slowly into ten, into a twenty, until here she sat, still staring at the dessert menu and her phone, hoping for him to show. What kind of asshole stands up a foreign exchange student? Her anger came out as a fresh sob instead, which she masterfully held back into a shaky breath and a few tears. Great. Makeup was ruined by now. “He was supposed to be here a half hour ago.”
Warren grew still as his dark eyes watched her, roaming over her. Small talk wasn’t exactly his forte; it certainly wasn’t what he was paid for, otherwise he would have been out of a job a long time ago. Not that this was small talk by any means...
She didn’t look like she really wanted the refill, but since she gave him the okay he went for it; melting ice cubes clinked together as he poured. Warren waited, caged into that aching moment of awareness. The voice that emerged was light and airy, though that wasn’t all, besides the noticeable accent. No, what called on Warren’s attention was the way her words threatened to break apart in the middle of her throat. Crap. He let out a low breath he didn’t even realize he was holding, looking towards the back briefly, hand reaching up out of reflex to rake through his hair — only to stop when he remembered it was tied back. Yeah, Warren knew he wasn’t the one who deserted her, but he didn’t give a shit about that because that knowledge really didn’t help him right now. A girl was still crying.
The half-filled pitcher was set down. Warren was left hovering beside her. ❝Hey,❞ he said. There wasn’t much force behind it, but just enough levity to gain traction, as well as hopefully her attention. ❝Whoever he was, he doesn’t matter. Leaving a girl to sit by herself in a restaurant? Kind of a classic lame guy move.❞
