“Keiko…” Yusuke whispered, staring back at the girl’s honey brown hues. Her eyes were so familiar, yet they had changed so much… There was a fire burning brightly in those eyes of hers, one he hadn’t seen in a long time. It pained him to hear her say that he was a part of his dream… Him? Yusuke Urameshi, leader of the Demon Kings. What future did the two have together when his existence felt so destructive? It felt like everyone he got close to suffered or had to fight to stay alive. He nearly lost Keiko once, and while she had chosen to become a fighter, he couldn’t forgive himself for putting her in danger that night. The pull between them was undeniable. Even when they fought to stay away from one another, something always drew them back into each other’s arms, but he couldn’t let it continue… Not when he feared that Keiko would die because of his reckless behavior.
She deserved so much better than this. She deserved the life of promise and success she had strived to achieve long before she met him.
“Don’t…” He whispered, taking a step back. “Don’t say that.” He loved her. Fuck, he loved her more than anything, but he couldn’t do this to her… He couldn’t allow her to fall deeper into a lifestyle she wasn’t meant to lead. He was born into this life of danger and crime.
There was still hope for her to live a normal life, and he wanted her to take it. “You were mine too…” He whispered, averting his gaze. Tears threatened to fill his eyes and he couldn’t bear to let Keiko see him so vulnerable… So weak. He needed to be strong for the both of them.
“But that’s all it’ll ever be, Keiko. A dream. You can’t… Fuck, you can’t be with me. Because of me, you nearly got killed and I know you can hold your own, but damn it… This isn’t what I want for you! I know it sounds selfish because you can make your own decisions, but… Do you really think you’d be involved in this hell if it weren’t for me? I can’t, Keiko… I won’t. You had a life outside of the Demon Broads and this turf war bullshit… I’ve always been a part of a gang… Whether it was Jibun no Yoru or the Demon Kings… It’s always been a part of me. You… There’s still hope. You don’t have to do this, Keiko. I don’t want you to.”
