The tests and challenges, the joys and adventures are all designed to awaken a man’s soul, draw him into contact with the masculine in himself, in other men, in the world, and in God, as Father. I make no distinction between taking a boy or a man on an adventure and, say, teaching that man to pray. The adventure — rightly framed — can be a powerful experience of God. And prayer or Bible study — rightly framed — is meant to be the same. Most boys and men share the perception that God is found in church and that the rest of life is . . . Just the rest of life. It’s the old Gnostic heresy, the division of the sacred and the profane. The tragedy of this is that the rest of life seems far more attractive to them than church, and this God seems removed and even opposed to the things that make them come alive. But as Christians, we believe God embraces the physical world, that he loves Creation as we do, pronounced it very good, that he speaks through it and uses it to teach us many things. . We have got to recover the wildness of spirituality.” - There are books where quotes stand out, and then there are books where quotes make you stand up. This is an adventure of a read. John Eldridge has a knack for stirring the man in you to rise up, deny yourself and pick up your cross. . He brings men on a journey of initiation, painting picturesque imagery as he takes you through each stage of a son to our Father. He patterns observations and details practicality. Most of all, he points you back to the heart of our Father. . Father, as You call us sons, take us on the adventure that only a Father can for His son. Do not just teach us to be men after You, but initiate us into Fathers just like You, yet always resting in our knowing of sonship in You. Father this generation of sons. Two. “Culture of Honor” - Danny Silk — “Honor creates life-giving and life-promoting relationships. The key here is “ACCURATELY ACKNOWLEDGING WHO PEOPLE ARE”. We can only do this when we recognise their God-given identities and roles. This is what we see in the statement of Jesus: “He who receives a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet’s reward. And he who receives a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man’s reward.” Names and titles are important. Mother, Father, Son, Daughter, apostle, prophet, Christian, human being - such names define a person’s role and identity and, when used correctly, establish God-designed relationships in which specific rewards are received to build and strengthen us.” — I laughed when I read that verse, because what came to my mind when I read that was: “He who receives a CGL (@ceceliatayyy) / ZS (@vienyap) in the name of a CGL / ZS shall receive a CGL / ZS’s reward.” 😂😭🙏🏻 — When we recognise that ALL parts of the Body of Christ are important, from the mighty brain to the delicate pinky toe, that none are insignificant and deemed more “important” in this great race, we channel Heaven on earth. This book phrases it all too aptly, not seeing each other as more or less, but as who they are in the eyes of Abba, as WHO HE MADE THEM. Even if they’re not there yet, we are to “accurately acknowledge who people are”, calling out their identity and destiny that He already laid out from whence before the foundations of this life. This changes what honor means. Honor is for EVERYONE, from the senior pastor to the pre-believing friend, to recognise and affirm the VALUE and WORTH that God placed in them. Reading this changed my outlook of this earthly walk. Great books deepen you, and great teachers enlighten you. I’m left desiring for more on how this Culture of Honor looks like from society to society, and how do Biblical standards come into play practically? One. “Elijah’s Revolution” - Jim Goll, Lou Engle — “Mr Samuels saw that we were not going to leave without an answer. He looked at us, and with a tear trickling down his cheek said, “You must understand, the Lord’s servant was possessed by God.” I didn’t ask another question. I didn’t have to; they had all been answered. I don’t care if it was from an angel, I don’t care if it was by visions or dreams, I don’t care whether it was the confirmation of many voices. Revelation came because someone had touched God and God had touched Him. Someone had laid hold of the hem of his garment, and drawn forth His presence.” — To me, Elijah was a once-in-a-generation kind of prophet. Even then, it took the joining of another once-in-a-generation kind of prophet in Elisha to take down together the reign of Ahab and Jezebel. Revolution requires the joining of generations. It demands honouring the former and empowering the next. Same body, different parts, varied purposes. When families join together as one with Jesus as the head, we start to see His original generational redemptive blueprint for this world. It’s never about what impact we as individuals can make. It’s about what we as His people, His body, His family creating His Story. #keiwreads
