Fate’s Library
Quarantine is giving me time to write, so my hiatus on Fate’s Library is over! The next chapter is up and I have many more planned for the coming weeks. The story is picking up, so hopefully soon you’ll get to see a lot more action, including The Librarians intentions as well as The visitor’s past!
There will be recurring characters as well so watch out for them. If you enjoyed any characters from the short stories so far or any upcoming ones be sure to stay tuned for that.

34. how would your character describe themselves? it doesn't have to line up with how they really are
This is,, a very interesting question for Minerva. Because the thing is, right, his experience of the malkavian bane is that he perceives three, sometimes Very Different, versions of reality simultaneously- and that extends to his perception of himself and who he is. I, in writing them, typically categorize these three versions by which Path of Enlightenment they're on, since that is one of the things that stays relatively free from bleed-through and is subsequently one of the features that Minerva himself moors his interpretation of what is going on around him to. In the reality that *everyone else* experiences, Minerva is functionally follower of the Path of Self-Focus- their mind adjusted to the kind of cognitive dissonance required to process everything they see- and in that reality he'd probably describe himself as "cute :3 don't worry abt it." In another, as a scholar on the Path of Caine, they'd call themself "a wolf in sheep's clothing," and in the world where they fell in with the Albigensians he'd say, cliche as it is, that he's a "nightmare dressed like a daydream."
24. do they have any creative hobbies? (art, writing, music, etc)
Hmmm. I think not really, no. I could see them idly doodling from time to time but It's not really a hobby or even much of a skill. It's like stickfigures and cartoon cats and shit.
7. favorite animal? why?
Kellen would insist that they love all beetles equally, but they did name their blog after dermestid beetles for a reason. Fundamentally, Kellen loves all beetles bc that's what the 'Tism latched on to. But, dermestids specifically weren't always their favourite- as a kid they actually had a big snake phase, and they still love snakes and reptiles in general a lot- but since dying they've felt a much closer connection with the decomposers of the world. It also helps that their job at the museum gave them the opportunity to actually care for a living colony, and they feel a sort of duty to the little guys to give back to them since they aren't able to fill the typical role that a corpse would in relation to them. Somewhere down the line, if they can dip their toes into Obfuscate, I think Kellen would get the Unliving Hive power so they could be a more direct host :)
21. their favorite place to be?
Anywhere in the presence of either their Collection, or their Regnant. The part they keep in their haven, or just about anywhere in the museum- but especially their own workshop, or Bernadette's office- are all places that are fundamentally Good to them.

@ kell: what's the number one place you want to travel to?
Cass: "These nights? practically over the moon- how else would I be? I've dealt with basically anyone who had any shit on me, and I've got more strings in my hands to yank everyone else around with than ever before. There's no one left breathing down my neck so I can go wherever I want and stick my fingers in whatever seems most interesting- retainer work is for fucking losers, freelancing is where its at. (Also, just between you and me, and just because no one will ever believe you, I ate the fucking Prince of New Orleans and got away with it.)"
Kel: "I'm really not much for travel, honestly. I don't adapt well to new environments, I never have. Even just moving out for college was a nightmare I barely survived. Besides, travel is hard enough to arrange when you aren't magically compelled to bring a basement's worth of preserved insect specimens with you. So, realistically the only serious travel I'll probably ever do is when the Museum inevitably has to relocate. That said, though, Bernadette's collection has a significant number of Greco-Roman artifacts and some of the things I've learned about the area through talking with her about them seem fascinating. I mean, obviously you see pictures online of Greece and Italy and such, and they're all gorgeous, but the way she talks about it adds a depth that I feel could only be further enriched by seeing it myself. So yeah, I guess a tour of the Mediterranean would be wonderful, if it was ever in the cards."

23. What emotion is the hardest for your OC to process? How about express?
Genuine affection, both ways. Cass grew up in a very neglectful environment and it kinda fucked up their whole perception of how caring for people works. She basically internalized that Absence = Love, and her relationship with Astrid only hammered that in even deeper. In her mind, if you really love someone, you stay as far away from them as you can. She sees getting close to people as only a manipulation tactic, both for her to use on others, and that others will try to use on her. Obviously, this mindset has been pretty horrible for her adult relationships.
4. When scared, does your OC fight, flee, freeze or fawn?
Kellen, unless they're the instigator of a situation or have something other than themself to defend, will pretty much always fawn. They don't like to think of themself as a 'people pleaser' per se, but like it or not that's the kind of response that their trauma spawned.
2. What's something about your OC that people wouldn't expect just from looking at them?
Honestly, with the way he dresses and the attitude he has, most people probably wouldn't think Danny's a librarian, or even an academic at all. And like, sure he wasn't in one of The Humanties TM, but he's a good archivist, an experienced occultist, and he knows a lot about art history. Also, he looks like if an elf was really into kpop.
14. How does your OC want to be seen by other characters?
Cute. Harmless. Unsuspecting. All of those are top tier in Minerva's books. Makes it easier for them to get the jump on you.
19. How does your OC behave when enraged?
Corin has a very long rope, and he can put up with a lot of shit before snapping, but when he does its with an unfathomable fury. It's loud, it's messy, he's probably definitely crying, and someone is gonna end up dead. He's very much prone to taking things out physically, even if his problem isn't physical at all. Very scenery-chewing villainous-meltdown darth-vader-choking-out-random-underlings style.
17. What is the worst thing you have put your OC through story-wise?
Harper's still pretty new, so I haven't really put them through much yet, but I think their sire's suicide is what fucked them up the worst. Not even the rampage their beast took them on afterwards, but specifically them waking up on the night of the Family Reunion to find her ashes just outside and then like sleepwalking through the night's proceedings in a dissociative haze- knowing that this very event had been the last straw for her, that she had decided she would rather not exist at all than go through with exactly the thing they were doing. They had genuinely really liked her, and at this point she was pretty much the sole pillar of their life, and they had ignored the signs out of denial and yeah. that night was like pure agony.

Danny: 🌎 Do they try to retain any part of their humanity?
Yeah! Danny actually has a whopping 8 humanity, despite being some six years dead. Mostly, they just try to be the same kind and friendly person they were before. He does his best to feed in a way he finds ethical (essentially providing some temporary relief to those already a step away from the great hereafter), and not get into any fights. But, he also got pretty lucky with starting out under an attentive sire in a relatively sleepy city, so they haven't had any serious tests of their commitment to humanity yet.
🤝 What is their relationship with their sire like?
Pretty good, all things considered. Very teacher-student. Their personalities don't exactly gel- Katie is very by the books about most things and doesn't really appreciate his sense of humor or style- but they've made it work so far. There's also more than a little resentment from Danny for the way she views this as her having "saved his life" when as far as he can see all she "saved" him from was student loans.
Apollo: 🖤 How do they feel about being turned? (How did they adjust? Do they feel differently now than they did when they were first turned?)
At first is was shock, and the adjustment period was definitely rough- since his sire promptly abandoned him he ended up internalizing some wack shit about what this whole situation was. After that, she saw it as a divine ordeal, but since his little dirt nap the reality of this being like a curse Curse is slowly seeping in.
Kellen: 🧛♀️ Do they have any preference regarding who they feed on/how they feed?
I'm evil and decided to give Kel the Bond Junkie+Blood Leech combo, so yeah, feeding is kind of a big deal for them. Currently, they have an arrangement with their mawla, Bernadette, to feed (and consequently be bound) exclusively with her. B is also their employer, so they basically have a daily meeting scheduled (which Kel privately thinks of as a "dinner date") to catch up on what's being done that night and make sure Kel doesn't starve. Typically it's just the two of them in Bernadette's office, though sometimes her last meal is still slumped in the corner recovering (which Kel honestly hates, but would never dream of saying anything about), and Kel will kneel to accept her wrist and then desperately try to pay attention to whatever it is she's decided to talk about while they eat. if they're lucky she might play with their hair but then they're sure to miss anything being said
Cass: 💉 Have they sired anyone? If so - why, how and did they claim their childe?
Cass has both threatened and promised to turn a number of people, but has never delivered and probably never will. They know exactly how much of a pain in the ass they were as a fledgling, and though they doubt anyone could possibly cause as much of a problem for them as they did to Astrid, they still don't really see the point in all that work for basically no benefit. Like, you can blood bond people without making them immortal first- there really isn't any advantage to the sire for embracing someone that is worth the ordeal that is being responsible for a childe.

18. What’s your oc’s relationship like with their family?
Well, it was pretty great up until he vanished on his way to uni. Since then he's managed to keep some contact with his mother (who is Extremely Worried for him) but in order to keep his family from finding out what happened to them, and therefore relatively safe, he's had to act more antagonistic towards them. It sucks, and it hurts, and he's really not good at it, but he trusts that it's for the best and it's been working so far.

Like with Danny, "Cass" is actually the nickname as her full name is Cassandra. Unlike Danny, Cass just started getting called Cass as a kid and rolled with it (subconsciously bc it has better gender than their full name).
Kellen:
13. What is your oc’s most prized possession? What’s the importance/meaning behind this item?
Oh man, Kel has so many Important Things it's hard to pick just one but I think it has to be Kaa. Kaa was a Ball Python and was the first snake Kel owned- and unfortunately he died shortly after they did (partly due to age but also in part due to neglect in the aftermath of their embrace). Kellen was absolutely devastated by this, and impulsively decided to fleshcraft his corpse into their own. It was kind of a rush job at first, but they've improved on it since, and now they have a snake embedded in their chest instead of a couple ribs. (close to their heart) (so they'll never be able to leave him alone again)
Apollo:
20. What does your oc’s bedroom/house look like? How does this reflect their personality?
Right now? Her house is the remnants of a burnt out west hollywood mansion that have sat untouched for 50 years. The "bedroom" she spent all that time sleeping in was a crawlspace under the stairs to the basement. I could spout some bullshit about how it reflects that she's "passed through fire" but really it just exhibits the shit fucking luck she had at the end of her chronicle.

from Kellen's playlist- Bernadette by IAMX, which I named their mawla (aka The Curator) after, and which pretty much encapsulated their relationship with said mawla. See, i gave Kel both the Blood Leech predator type, as well as the Bond Junkie flaw, which meant their sire's insistence that they cleave off their family just like he does was met with complicated feelings. They also needed a way to continue supporting themself in those fledgling nights, but conservation work, as flexible as it can be, is still not the greatest environment for kindred. Lucky for them, the mysterious owner and sole curator of a local private museum happened to be a True Brujah of significant age (Kel doesn't know exactly how old Bernadette is, but by some of the objects in her collection she may well have seen Carthage for herself), who was interested in having a conservator to hold a position on a more permanent basis (since having to rehire every time a mortal conservator died was getting tedious, but Temporis can only do so much), and they were able to work out a deal. Kel gets their vitae from the curator, and is fully and exclusively blood bound in return. Kel maintains the collection in perpetuity, and gets to do so for a significantly better salary than most conservationists, as well as having flexible (read: nocturnal) hours. Kel also gets to let themself guiltlessly feel the full depth of whatever kind of affection the bond causes them, since they know with absolute certainty that Bernadette will never judge them, or feel anything for them in return.
