Indy Politics continues its year-end interviews with Indiana's statewide elected officials.  In this installment, we speak with newly elected State Treasurer Kelly Mitchell.

The Kelly Campaign

Just over a year ago, I made one of the biggest decisions of my life: I decided to run for the office of Indiana Treasurer of State.

In that one amazing year, I estimate I’ve attended 300 events in almost all 92 counties. I’ve learned a lot about the people of Indiana, and I’d like to share a few of those lessons with you.

A lot of Hoosiers enjoy learning how the Treasurer serves Indiana

Basically, the Treasurer is the person Hoosiers trust to manage their money. You are paying taxes and fees to the State of Indiana. You should be certain the person you’re putting in the office is up to the task of keeping it secure and earning money for you!

Additionally, the Treasurer also helps provide funding for infrastructure projects through the Indiana Bond Bank, collects and distributes the state’s 911 funds, oversees Indiana’s college savings plan, and much more.

The Treasurer of State’s office is a dynamic, challenging and rewarding place of public service. It’s an honor to be asking you for your support.

People are really worried about being able to afford college

I know this feeling all too well. I have two kids in college -- one at IU and one at Wabash. I worked my own way through college at Valparaiso University, and I learned a great deal from that experience. I hope my children will graduate college as free from debt as possible, so I started a CollegeChoice 529 savings account for each of them that is helping pay for their education.

As Treasurer, I want to make those savings available and attractive to more people by encouraging public-private partnerships for the creation and growth of those accounts. I also want to emphasize the “Choice” aspect of CollegeChoice. These savings accounts aren’t only for 4-year colleges. They can be used for study toward a certificate, trade schools, and a number of post-secondary options.

Hoosiers want to be smart with their money

I believe that every time a Hoosier spends a dollar wisely, it makes Indiana stronger. With that in mind, I will be working to make Indiana the most financially literate state in the nation. My SAVE Indiana plan recognizes four different groups -- Students, Adults, Veterans, and Educators -- and realizes that each has a unique set of financial needs.

I want to work with all the people already putting forth great efforts, both in state government and in the private sector, to connect people with the resources that are available for them. Working together, Indiana can remain fiscally stable for generations to come.

It’s been an amazing year. I’ve seen more of our beloved Indiana than I ever thought possible, and met more wonderful people than I could have imagined. I’d be honored to continue to serve Indiana as your next State Treasurer, and I ask for your vote on November 4.

Republican State Treasurer candidate Kelly Mitchell is going up on television.  Her campaign unveiled her statewide ad today.  It highlights her tenure in public service saving the taxpayers' money.

With the State GOP Convention just a few days away, Indy Politics offered time to the candidates to make their last minute pitches to the delegates who will be voting for them on Saturday.*

State Treasurer Candidate Wants to Expand Hoosier Financial Literacy

State Treasurer candidate Kelly Mitchell unveiled a plan Wednesday which she says will help some Hoosiers with their finances.

Mitchell announced the “SAVE Indiana” plan, targeted at increasing  financial awareness for Students, Adults, Veterans and Educators.

 “My vision for the Treasurer’s office is to make Indiana the most financially literate state in the nation,” Mitchell said. “In order for our state to maintain the balanced budgets and low taxes we’ve worked so hard for, every Hoosier should have the opportunity to learn more about saving, credit, and everyday financial issues.”

Mitchell says too many students are graduating college with debt and some parents find it easier to talk to their children about drugs and alcohol than finances so she wants to change that.

Mitchell has worked in the Treasurer of State’s Office as the Director of TrustINdiana, Indiana’s local government investment pool with assets currently more than $500 million. Prior to joining the Indiana Treasurer of State’s Office, Kelly was a County Commissioner for two terms in Cass County.
