Vancouver’s integrity commissioner has ruled that Mayor Ken Sim and seven of his ABC Vancouver councillors broke city rules by meeting in private to discuss and plan city business. Lisa Southern’s report, dated Aug. 22, was based on a complaint lodged last summer by Green Coun. Pete Fry. The report concludes that Sim and councillors Sarah Kirby-Yung, Lisa Dominato, Lenny Zhou, Brian Montague, Mike Klassen, Peter Meiszner and Rebecca Bligh breached the Vancouver Charter by privately planning how they would vote on and amend two items before council: funding for a turf field at Moberly Park and a climate justice charter that was ultimately defeated.

Ken Sim wasted millions of dollars hiring cops to violently steal poor people's belonging this week. They couldn't offer anyone in the encampment housing so all the people are still there, just without their survival equipment. The encampment is home for these folks, the city may offer SRO rooms, but as someone who works in a nicer one, they are often unsafe, bug/mould infested, and are such a hectic environment living there will make a sane person unwell. The province can offer no safe sutable housing in this city because all our money goes to useless police action. The Canadian charter of rights and freedoms ch8 protects a reasonable right to privacy in ones home. This decampment is unconstitutional.

For the first time since Vancouver council created a code of conduct, the mayor has used it to file a complaint against a fellow councillor

For the first time since Vancouver council created a code of conduct, the mayor has used it to file a complaint against a fellow councillor — but it didn't go the way Ken Sim likely hoped. 

Integrity Commissioner Lisa Southern ruled that councillor Christine Boyle did not contravene the city's code when she revealed she voted against the city's decision to stop being a Living Wage Employer. 

The decision was made in a private council meeting — known as in camera — in January, and then made public by the city in March.

Boyle argued the city's official communication plan for the announcement, along with the advice she received from staff, allowed her to state how she voted. Sim filed his complaint a week after Boyle's statement, argued it was a breach of the code, and declined an offer by Southern to resolve the dispute through an informal resolution.

In her decision, Southern said she did not find the city treated Boyle's vote as confidential.

Ken Sim concedes Vancouver mayoral election to Kennedy Stewart

The NPA candidate fell 984 votes short of victory.

NPA mayoral candidate Ken Sim issued the following statement this afternoon:

“I would like to congratulate Kennedy Stewart on becoming Vancouver’s next mayor. Kennedy and his supporters fought a spirited campaign. The city and our communities are all better off because Kennedy and all of the other Mayoral, Council, School Board, and Park Board candidates ran for election. “I apologize that it has taken time to acknowledge that Kennedy Stewart won the mayoral election. Given the close nature of the result, we believed that we owed it to our supporters and the city to ensure we had the correct result. This was not done to take away from Kennedy Stewart or his team’s accomplishment in any way. “I wish Kennedy Stewart and everyone on Council, Park Board, and School Board only the best over the next four years. I will always be there for you if I can help you in any way.” Respectfully Ken Sim
