mickey 17 textposts because i saw the movie yesterday and apparently that was too early for anyone to make some yet

I don’t think I’ve seen anyone else mention how significant it was that Nasha, a Black women was the person who physically put herself on the line to save the baby creeper from the incinerator. I immediately caught that Micky 17 and Nasha were significantly less hostile to the creepers than almost everyone else (Dorothy). Kenneth Marshall has been panned as an empty, goofy trump stand in, I think this is too dismissive of his character. His politics are christofascist, eugenist and white suprematist. Mickey 17 and Kai mirror Ylfa and Kenneth at the dinner, it’s essentially a double date. When we saw that Mickey had ‘won’ the dinner I thought he’d get to bring Nasha. Then Kenneth tells Kai about her suitably for carrying a white baby “naturally” and everything clicked for me. Kai saw Micky as a novelty and even fights with Nasha over access to the Mickey’s and suggests she’s being greedy by not sharing and disrespects their relationship. She doesn’t even acknowledge the autonomy of Mickey 17 and 18, she’ll take whichever. Early on in the film the ships passengers are warned not to waste energy and calories on having sex. Nasha and Mickey defy this order, regularly but does it matter if they do? Why doesn’t anyone try to stop them? Why are they allowed to live together? Nasha’s Black and Mickey is expendable, he dies and gets reprinted. They are both held in low esteem despite their respective skill and importance. I think the film says a lot politically and most of the interesting stuff has barely been touched upon.

I watched Mickey 17 yesterday, and I can not stop thinking about the sauce.

Because, when you are restricting calories, the pasta sauces and salad dressings are like one of the first things that you should cut from your diet.

Restricting calories is one things whole Niflheim colony is supposed to do.

Of course, we already see Kenneth Marshall and Ylfa being hypocrites and typical politicans and having a feast for themselves while people under their rules are having controlled portions.

So... why is the sauce repeatedly mentioned?

Why is Ylfa obssessed with making different kind of sauces and perfecting them?

Then it hit me with her using the baby creeper's tail to make a sauce.

When Marshall wanted to exterminate all creepers I was like yeah, this is a clear reference to Christopher Columbus and the indigeneous people.

But using the creepers' body parts, their tails, their life sources to make something as "rich" as sauce.

I think it was a direct reference to Britain colonisation of India for spices and colonisation of Africa for their natural sources.

Colonizing, taking what belongs to the natives of the land to make rich man's sauce.

I think I've talked about this too much to people but I always think the direct comparison of Kenneth Marshall to Trump is an under-representation of. the amount of evil people that are. visible in his character

like Trump is absolutely a very clear inspiration for Marshall's incompetence and his narcissism, but I also think (not only his position as a former senator) puts him in line with some of the other power hungry ghouls on the lower rungs of conservative legislation. He's deftly uncharismatic and has to rely on power to get people to at least pretend to like him, reminds me of JD Vance (not to mention the whole thing with him wearing visible eye makeup during the talk show sequence, makeup in general, is a think JD Vance has been made fun of for like. forever now). Known ghoul Matt Gaetz has one of the most joyless, unnatural smiles in the world. So does Kenneth Marshall. (no disrespect to Mark Ruffalo there, i'm pretty sure he's either doing some kind of facial work or has prosthetic teeth to create that)

The evangelicalism that Niflheim is founded upon in is obviously very closely knit with the conservative party, but also works to make Marshall very reminiscent of a lot of Megachurch pastors and Televangelists-- (this isn't a revelation or anything, it's very obvious. HE LITERALLY HAS HIS OWN TV SHOW) lest we forget the time he tried to convince that lady to have his children IN FRONT OF YLFA, BTW, WHO ALSO SEEMED DOWN WITH THAT WHICH IS. whatever. i'm pretty sure the bible does not permit adultery, but cult leaders are very well known for disregarding such a rule and justifying it under the rule of god.

and of course the full on dictator mode he gets into in the last act is very clearly reminiscent of like. every dictator ever. pick one.

oh yeah and bong joon ho literally said the character was inspired by "a mix of many different politicians" and "dictators that we have seen throughout history."

so. that's just all the ones i noticed i guess

okay so my thoughts are a little messy but thinking a lot about the intro of Kenneth Marshall and how his campaign/propaganda seems to revolve around the idea of him being 'the one and only' or smthn (can't remember the exact wording but it's that sentiment), ending with him being the one human killed(not self sacrificed) for everyone else's survival/to make things equal....... good.

and obviously there's the commentary on how he panders to the westerner's (specifically American's) rampant sense of individualism, and need to believe they're special, but there's something to be said about how he says in the cafeteria when we first meet him that he feels like everyone there could be 'the one and only'. yes all that stuff I said before, but I truly believe he would have thrown as many bodies at the problem before he'd thrown himself (obviously) and so many would I have let him.

Obviously Marshall had to die, he always had to be the one to die, but I also think he's the only one who can be killed in a way that would truly make it even. Because of who he is, people may sacrifice themselves for him, and people may be sacrificed for him. Like I know that's weird and reductive, but do you kind of get what I'm saying? Kenneth Marshall was the one and only death that would make it even, narratively speaking; he had to be the one killed, anyone else would have been simply a sacrifice.
