Jackie McLean – A Ghetto Lullaby (Full Album)
A Ghetto Lullaby is a live album by American saxophonist Jackie McLean recorded at the Jazzhus Montmartre in 1973 and released on the SteepleChase label.
“Within a five day period in 1973, altoist Jackie McLean, who had only made one album (a live set) between 1968-72, cut enough material for five records. This worthy set features his intense style in a quartet with pianist Kenny Drew, bassist Niels Pedersen and drummer Alex Riel, recorded live at Montmartre in Copenhagen. Although the material — Drew’s “Callin’,” athe ballad “Where Is Love,” a pair of William Gault songs and McLean’s “Jack’s Tune” — is not all that memorable, the altoist’s passionate solos and very distinctive sound uplift the music and make this an advanced hard bop set worth acquiring.” – Scott Yanow/AllMusic.
Tina Brooks – Back to the Tracks (Full Album)
Back to the Tracks is a hard bop album by tenor saxophonist Tina Brooks recorded in 1960 and released posthumously.
“The music that comprises Back to the Tracks was recorded in September 1960, months after the sessions for True Blue, but it sat on the shelves until Mosaic reissued it as part of their Complete Blue Note Recordings box, even though it was penciled in for release. Like Minor Move, Tina Brooks first session that stayed unreleased for over 20 years, Back to the Tracks is an excellent hard bop set, and it’s hard to understand why it wasn’t released at the time. Brooks leads a fantastic band featuring alto saxophonist Jackie McLean, trumpeter Blue Mitchell, pianist Kenny Drew, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Art Taylor through three originals and two standards. Each musician has opportunity to shine, but Brooks remains the center of attention. His style is remarkably fluid, capable of graceful, elegant turns on the ballads and clean, speedy improvisations on the up-tempo bop. Each of the five songs have breathtaking moments, confirming Brooks talents as a saxophonist, composer and leader. Listening to Back to the Tracks, it’s impossible to figure out why the record wasn’t released at the time, but it’s a hard bop gem from the early ’60s to cherish.” – Stephen Thomas Erlewine/AllMusic.

Kenny Drew Trio — Elegy
Great work from the Kenny Drew trio of the 80s – a lineup that always manages to bring out some deep sounds in their music – in this case, just the right undercurrent of sadness and loss to fit the title well! Drew’s piano is beautiful at this point in his career – as fluid as before, but even more filled with feeling and depth – matched perfectly by the sensitive bass work of Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen, and the drums of Ed Thigpen – who, like Drew, is still constantly evolving in his second home overseas. The tunes are all well-chosen to fit the theme of the title – and tracks include “The Last Romantic”, “Django”, “Willow Weep For Me”, “Elegy”, “Tune Down”, and “Finale” (Dusty Groove, Inc.)
