"I am never upset for the reason I think." --A Course in Miracles The above is from Ken Wapnick's "Journey Through the Text of A Course in Miracles."
The ego is nothing more than the Son's belief in it....The mind's decision-maker is the only thing that gave the ego its existence. If we withdraw that power, the ego slips back into the nothingness from whence it came.
Journey Through the Text of A Course in Miracles -- Ken Wapnick
Denial leads to problems because when we reject something in ourselves, evaluating it as sinful, we inevitably project it and see it in others, condemning them for our perceived sin. Since we are not aware of having done so, we are sure we are justified in our judgments and reactions to them.

Regardless of how convincing the seeming witnesses are to the reality of this world and our perceptions, they still do not have the power to make the unreal real. Somewhere in our minds that statement makes us quake with fear, because it means that no matter what we attempt to do with this self, we cannot establish a reality that it does not have. This is welcome news to the right mind, but to the wrong mind it is dreadful, and we will do everything in our power to blot it out – – the world's purpose of eradicating the truth.

Seeing
When we see someone through the lens of our ego, the image is grossly distorted. The ego wants it that way because it means all we are seeing is a body. Not a spirit. Not Love. Just a sinful weak body. If we see it in someone else, it is the reflection of us. Everything we think about another body is really what we think about ourselves. Our mirror image. But that hate and anger is so uncomfortable we project it out so we see it “out there”. So we can say- it isn’t me, it’s you. That is what keeps the ego alive and that is what keeps us shut off from Love and Oneness. Seeing separation and differences. Because surely if we are one, then I am all that I hate and more.
Hate- self hate- shame- the core of the ego’s method of being. This isn’t me. This isn’t anyone. This is the lie.
So we come to the crux of it then. The weakness I see is the weakness I believe is in me. When I forgive and have compassion for others, I forgive it in myself and show myself the Love I desperately seek. The residual negative self view that was ingrained in my mind is slowly but surely coming to the surface and expressing itself in my thoughts about others, but especially my chosen teacher, my special partner. I need to pay attention. Not get caught up in the actual thing or annoyance and not make it real. I need to step back and say- what is my mind trying to show me? What (or who) do I need to forgive? And then forgive myself for the beliefs that were never real and for thinking someone I love could be those things too. We are all one. What I am so must you be. What you are so am I. If I am Love, so are you. And Love is what we are.
If I defend myself I am attacked. Not the other way around. Defense makes attack real. It takes two to attack. If one simply realizes what they are seeing is not real - that there is another way to view this and it is with Love- the attack cannot be completed. Relationships are our most powerful teacher because it allows us to practice ending the cycle of attack and defense.
Today’s ACIM lesson is:
When I am Healed I am not Healed Alone. When I forgive, I have forgiven the world. When I love, I Love all. Healing is a state of mind. It is joining with the One mind and knowing that whatever you may see with the body’s eyes, the Mind is always at peace, with God, perfectly safe and whole. What happens to the body is a distraction from the truth. The body is the ego’s tool for proving separation is real. The Mind allows us to see beyond the body and to the part of all of us that we share. The body can now be used for a new purpose when the Mind is interpreting our reality instead of the ego. Through the ego’s eyes, we are individuals who must put ourselves first. Through God’s eyes- through the healed mind, we are all parts of the same One, all struggling to know ourselves as the Love that we are. And through forgiveness, compassion, empathy, and no judgment, we can know Love and know ourselves.

(The miracle) is a shift in perception; it is a correction of the ego's way of looking to the Holy Spirit's way of looking...We do not change the world, we change our minds about the world. We do not seek to change another person; we change how we are looking at that person. The Holy Spirit will then work through us to do whatever He thinks is best. It is a change in mind with a shift in perception. That is what a miracle is, and that is the goal of the Course.
