Magnum Coffee Roasters Kenya AA Fragrance: burnt brownie = 1 Aroma: faint honeydew behind of veil of creme brule (mostly brule) = 2 Flavor: aggressive burnt chocolate chip cookies = 3 Acidity: faint twinkle beneath an oil slick = 3 Body: firm, impenetrable and unfolding into infinity = 4 Balance: bitterness capsizes this boat = 4 Aftertaste: bitter carob, burnt marshmallow = 1 Cuppers Points: don't even think about it = 0 Final Score: 69 points The point of "Coffee Journal" is to treat all coffee the same. Most specialty roasters would never even cup this roaster's work but why not? We need to constantly compare, contrast and remind people of the differences in roasts between varietals, origins, processing and roasting. We believe in the democratic approach. This coffee is the lowest I have scored. Its unfortunate to be the bearer of bad news on a local company but this coffee, without hesitation is the worst we have cupped in a long time. They are very successful at selling coffee, mostly through private-label but also under a variety of brands that appear at Costco and other discounters. This bag was packaged under the "National Coffee Brands, Inc." label, which brags about being roasted in small batches on the back of the bag. The store where it was purchased was a confused disaster of too much. Too much syrup (for sale by the bottle or in their super-automatic espresso drinks), too much tea, too much coffee (multiple brands and sized in a dizzying array of displays and bulk and bags, even a "roast your own" air roaster--which frankly was the most interesting part of their business), too many cups, mugs, teas, teapots, coasters, jelly donuts, Odwalla, etc. While I know little about their key company statistics, the girth of their facility suggests a successful business. Some people are best at the business, which so often seems to be counter to the quality.
