“Just because you have a weight problem, why should I have to restrict myself?” he’d say to me and it was hard to argue. He was younger and naturally lean and could eat anything. It wasn’t his fault I had food issues, so he’d eat and I’d watch, drinking my Diet Coke, constantly hungry and still heavier than either of us wanted me to be. It got to the point where “no public eating” for me was almost a rule. “Too hard to control the portions and the calories, especially here in the US.” So if we went out to a restaurant or a party or an event, it was virtually always water, coffee or Diet Coke for me. And once I was slim enough, people didn’t even question it.
