           a tender smile dawned on her face once nellie looked down at her hand which now a ring adorned. 2018 was certainly turning out to be an amazing year for eleanor crain. she found the familiar number in her phone of the dudleys whom nellie considered to be extended family. of course, she wanted to be the first person to tell them the ( w o n d e r f u l )  news of her engagement to arthur. alas, horace did not pick up the phone. 

              nellie was bursting with excitement! thus, she could not wait any longer to tell horace and clara of her engagement. so, once she heard the beep, she spoke. ‘ hi guys! it’s nellie, i’m sorry that i couldn’t reach you both but i have some wonderful news. ‘ a beat. ‘ arthur asked me to marry him last night and i said yes! i wanted to personally invite the two of you to our wedding and i will send out an invitation once we finalize the details. ‘ a few seconds passed by until she spoke again. ‘ i hope you two have a happy new year. we’ll talk soon! love you both. ‘

    THIS  IS  SO  SWEET  AND  NICE    !   uni  has  been  a  little  hectic  lately  and  so  i haven’t  been  able  to  write  as  much  as  i’d  like  to    ,        but  i  really  appreciate  this  and  i  look  forward  to  writing  with  you  so  much    !

“I think you’re stupid because you’re still there,” was William’s cool, yet a little tense reply, fingers tapping restlessly against his cane -- the same way it always did when he strayed too long from home. Where familiarity was. This? This college, these woods...they were not familiar and trying a hand at being a father figure towards this....boy was way out of comfort zone. “You’ve still got a chance at something other than this and you’re...you’re still here. It’s mad, it’s...” It wasn’t mad, he told himself sternly. Maybe this was familiarity to Horace as well. Head cocked slowly as eyes lingered on everything but the other. “Why?”

“ why do you live in such a weird house? ” little horace

“Nevermind that,” was William’s snipped response as he steered the boy clear of the house and hastily rushed him down the rocky path from whence he came. It was a damn miracle -- a miracle! -- that he’d spotted the youngster before Poppy anyone else could see him and William would’ve had to explain how exactly Horace came to be. It wracked his nerves more than he thought capable. How insufferable an act of weakness could give birth (literally) to a walking scrap of flesh. William nudged the boy forward some more with a jab to his lower back, eyes gazed intensely -- waiting to see the first sign of the cottage and have this burden be lifted from thin shoulders. 

But it wouldn’t. It’d never be lifted, it’d be the mistake that drove an already fragile mind to the wall.

William couldn’t help but feel affection for the boy but that affection came with a steeled resolve to keep it hidden. Keep him hidden, not just from his wife but from the reaching hand of Death that had latched onto his other children. “Run along. And don’t....you don’t come back, y’here?” Maybe he’d lose this son too but losing him to life was something he could get through. It was far better than the other ultimatum.
