as painless as he could

Martyn’s fingers trace the scar across Ren’s throat - a little quirk of his that has become more prominent as more people became red and final death breathed down their necks. “I’m sorry I couldn’t do it cleanly.” Something tightens in Ren’s chest. It did hurt horribly, yes, but… He takes Martyn’s hands, kisses his palms, rough from work and fighting. “You served your king with honor,” Ren murmurs. “You did good.” Martyn tries to smile.

It has... graphic descriptions of violence (well, as much as consensual ritualistic execution counts as violence)! And some kisses! :D

Martyn hopes he’ll be able to finish the job in a single swing, but it doesn’t work. The axe goes down, meets the back of Ren’s neck and sorta… gets stuck there in between vertebrates. His king makes a horrible, whizzling noise and falls forward, catching himself on his hands. His fingers spasm against the stone. Matyn tries to free the axe, and he needs to pull with all his strength to get the blade out. Blood gushes all over the altar, Ren’s body, Martyn’s boots.

Shit, Martyn thinks, trying not to panic. Shit, it must hurt so much!

The second strike misses, because his hands are unsteady. Ugh, he is doing a horrible job. isn’t he? And Ren decided to rely on him of all people…

The third strike lands with a loud wet crunch. There's a feeling of resistance, then something -the spine, it can only be a spine- snaps and Ren’s head rolls across the stones, painting everything red, red, red.

Martyn can’t quite explain why he picks it up. It’s just not appropriate for a king's head to lie on the ground like some trash. Ren’s face looks… dead. There’s no expression there, no fear, or pain, or certainty he was talking with a few minutes earlier. His beautiful blue eyes look like glass. Martyn closes them, even though the head begins to feel lighter in his hands already. Ren’s lips are pale, the blood runs down from the corner of his mouth. So red.

What comes over him? Martyn doesn’t know, but he brings it to his face and kisses that cooling dead mouth in a twisted attempt to comfort. He wanted to do this for so long; all those conflicting secret feelings... Blood smears across his lips, metallic and thick. Ren won’t know, right? The awareness must not be there already, so it’s not a problem! It just feels appropriate to give him one last kiss before his body disintegrates into dust.

Later, when it’s all done and they sit on their shared bed in Dogwart’s dungeon, Ren holds Martyn’s hands and thanks him for his service. He kisses every finger, saying that even if it did hurt, it wasn’t as bad as his first death. Saying that he is grateful for what those calloused blooded hands did. He’s going to kill Martyn’s poor heart with this shit, no axes or swords needed!

"It was an honor, my liege" Martyn says, his voice low, his eyes averted. "I couldn't let anyone else do it."

Ren chuckles.

“Yeah, someone else might’ve kissed my dead lips, and we can’t have this, can we?”

Ok, fine, Martyn would actually like to die immediately, thank you very much!
