My name is Joe Kelly, I’m from suburban New Jersey, in a place called Hunterdon County. I go to the Manhattan School of Music, so I study with Chris Lamb, Erik Charleston, Duncan Patton, and She-e Wu. For the CD application it was an interesting process. I ended up using a marimba solo I had recorded from a recital a little while ago. This piece called For Marimba I, Tokuhide Niimi, it’s a really nice Japanese piece. And then I recorded one of the new Thompkins solos from the second French-American Book, Solo #1, which was fun with the kick drum and everything. And then doing the cymbal Etude was very tricky, trying to get a good take and get a good mic placement so that it was clear what i was doing. So you could hear the rhythm and hear the soft consistency, and figuring out if was better higher, is it better lower, is it better further away? So the tape was a very interesting process put together. For the recording of the cymbal Etude, I used some 16″ Medium-Heavy vintage orchestral’s. I thought they had the right balance of clear articulation, I like the dark sound, and they could speak clearly and evenly when it was soft but I could still play those fast triplets in the middle section and get a nice, clear articulation, pretty big volume for the size of the cymbal, just because of how thick they are. I also really liked that I was able to kind of control the note length of some of the tenuto notes at the end of the phrases and stuff like that, so it made for a nice contrast throughout the piece.
