The Discobole, by Mathieu Kessels (1784-1836), neo-classical Belgian sculptor.
Kessels, established in Rome since end of 1818, created The Discobole end of 1822 as a plaster.
Soon afterwards, a marble was commissioned by the 6th Duke of Devonshire (1790-1858) ; signed and dated 1828, it was shipped to Chatsworth, UK, where it is on display.
Later, bronze copies were cast by the Compagnie Anonyme des Bronzes, Molenbeek (Brussels, Belgium), namely : - one, created for and exhibited at the 1862 London Universal Exhibition, now stands in front of the Palais des Academies, Brussels (shown) ; - another one, created in 1900, is now in front of the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam ; - a third one is also known ; unpublished academically at the moment.
