Some thoughts on Steven Universe: the Movie
I forgot about Jasper. I forgot she existed at all! She wasn't in the film at all! What the heck happened to her???
That's a bit sad. She was so big at one point and then she seems to have been completely erased.
I did feel that The Movie actually presented Pink/Steven's mum as quite uh. Well. Like there was nothing left of Rose, the loving person she attempted to be - in anyone's minds. The way Steven speaks so bitterly of her... I actually thought that was a pity. Even if Rose was in many ways a fantasy, and she hurt so many people. She really, really tried her best, and did better than any of the other Diamonds. She was deeply immature, hedonistic, lacking in compassion if not empathy, and immorally careless towards others. But I absolutely believe she loved her friends, Pearl, Greg and Steven. She was aware that she could not fix what she had broken, and she was willing to give up everything - her experience of her chosen home the Earth, the company of her friends, the pleasures of humans and their societies - in the end. I don't believe that it was simply fascination with the idea that drove her to create Steven.
Also, I still wonder about the absolutely exceptionally crazy (organic-)life based powers that Steven inherited, like, why the heck did Pink have those though?
Spinel was taken in by the Diamonds, and Garnet was shaking her head, and I was kind of like....uhhhhhhh I guess they're all unhealthy, unbalanced creatures but I guess they're complementary???
And I thought Pearl's role in the movie was....... disappointing. Amethyst and Garnet had some pretty heartwarming callbacks, but Pearl....she didn't respond to the concert at all, or Rose, so I'm not sure how the heck they concluded she'd recovered a 'piece'. And thus I'm not sure about the implied message that Pearl only started exhibiting independence AFTER the object of her service 'disappeared' by changing into a different form. I don't think that's how it was presented before either.
I wouldn't say it was really icky that baby Pearl imprinted on GREG of all people, in some terrible ironic twist of fate, but it made me a bit uncomfortable, even if they'd been shown to overcome their differences and reconcile on the basis of their shared love for a deeply flawed person.
For the rest, loved Steven and his voice change, loved the message about life being change and you mustn't expect it to just Stop.
Bit weirded out by how Connie was sitting on a teleporting lion but let weakened Steven climb up the glass wall by himself when she could see him struggle (in the time she was looking up at him she could have grabbed him and flung him on top of the injector and gone back to rescuing civilians).
Wish we'd seen more of Connie impacting the story, period.
Thought the songs were a bit much in the beginning. But got used to it.
LOVED the Garnet bits - Sapphire saving RUBY!!! And the moment of the Truth!
Loved the B team, especially the little bit about them all having wanted to kill Steven before and laughing about it.
I'm a bit surprised that apparently the poison was all released but nobody on earth got absolutely murdered by it anyway. that is to say, I'm not surprised nobody died, just surprised they hyped the stakes, and then let it happen - with no consequences.
Overall I thought it had great pacing, good songs, enough background (although a bit weird that they had the gems introduce themselves in the beginning and then half the plot was about their life journey to become themselves - a bit of a double introduction). The ensemble of characters was generally well-used.
Spinel was interesting, her back and forth were believable, even if the last turnaround was a stretch. She was a good character, she just felt really very additional. They made her appropriately annoying though. She really felt like a deeply clingy dependent and selfish person who cannot or rather, will not, read the signs other people are giving off. (But is it any wonder, if one's survival depends on amusing one's 'friend'. )
Pink Diamond's feelings made sense, her actions were wrong. She abandoned her, instead of talking to her, communicating her true feelings so they might have a chance at becoming true friends. This only reinforces however that PD had no language or even conceptual space for doing this. Spinel's PURPOSE in existence (a single purpose she had been created for) was to be her 'friend' and make her laugh. But that was a lost cause. Spinel was created a jester, not a friend (the Diamonds clearly had no concept of true friendship). Spinel was a servant. You cannot be friends with a servant. And gem society dictated that every gem which could not fulfill its purpose, would be shattered. If Pink Diamond had been like the other diamonds, she would have shattered Spinel the moment she stopped amusing her - which arguably may have been from the very start. Instead, she ran and left her behind. Her every action was conditioned by the system she lived in. She did better, but she hadn't even imagined yet the possibility of gems being able to change (through truthful communication and outside a system that will kill you for diverging). She did not kill Spinel, but she discarded her as surely as any Diamond would have.
And isn't that exactly what Steven re-learned about himself? Change. The possibility of it being essential, the reality of it being inescapable.
It was a good job this movie, and it was characteristically heartwarming and I did feel a little choked up by the end. But it also felt a little bit like not all of the pieces lined up entirely satisfactorily. 7.5/10
Peak comedy is a picture of an animal accidentally vibing with human things and someone going 'unrestrained summer fun'.
I'm looking up Becca/leader of das sound machine RIGHT NOW
