Despina said that Shahrzad was the first bride Khalid visited, thus how she was able to convince him to let her live another day.
But, like... Can you imagine if he had not been curious enough about her to show up? Her whole plan depended on him talking to her, it's what she expected from a wedding night but actually hers was the exception! What would she have done if he hadn't broken his own rule and simply... never appeared? I don't doubt she would have fought and found some way out of it, especially when you consider her mindset in the beginning of the book, but still... HOW!?
