Arc'Teryx Khard Capability: Question From A Reader
Question asked from JP: "Looking for a new pack to purchase and have been eye-balling the Arcteryx Khard....I have a question in regards to its weight capacity. I've used the TAD Fastpack EDC for camping, hiking, traveling across the US and as a range bag - but it is only rated for 40-50 lbs of carry (not usually a problem as I'm a believer in packing light). At 70 lbs, ....I also have a Goruck GR1 that I've put 100+ lbs in on numerous occasions without a worry in the world....Obviously the Khard is a pack without an external frame or a load-bearing waist belt. I don't plan on ever having to load it with lead and climb a 14'er, and I imagine it would be uncomfortable to fill with anything more than 50lbs. But I like knowing the capabilities of something before I pull the trigger on it. How much weight have you personally loaded the Khard with? And any idea of what the limits of the pack might be?"
A great question that we get quite often. Here is our response. Hope it helps...
Heaviest I've personally gone with it is about 40 pounds. It took the weight just fine while on a 2,000 foot approach climb to a summit. It was my official stress test of the pack.
The Khard is a great adaptable pack. I'd say it is equivalent to the TAD Fast line of packs...just updated.
I generally tell folks it is a multi-mission bag. Meaning, it does good at a lot of things, but only great at very few things. Can it be a 3 day pack? If you pack right, sure. But it's not the best 3 day pack on the market. Same goes for being a range bag, rope bag, approach bag, etc. It will handle all those activities (and more) just fine. But because it is not specifically geared towards any specific activity, it's hard to say it is THE BEST....but it will get the job done just fine.
To answer your question on weight limit, I'd say no more than 60-70lbs over a long period of time. I think the bag would hold together just fine, but the carry design of it would put wear and tear on the user. It's just not a HEAVY load pack.
Carryology does the absolute best review I have ever seen on the pack. Check it out here: http://www.carryology.com/bags/road-tests-arcteryx-khard-30/
Arc'teryx Miura 35 SIDE BY SIDE Arc'teryx Khard 30
For those of you that have been following us for some time (or has seen the most recent video on our YouTube channel) you know we are fans of the Arc'teryx Khard line of packs.
The Khard line was developed and made by the Arc'teryx LEAF (Law Enforcement Armed Forces) division. This is a separate division from the standard Arc'teryx you commonly find in general consumer stores.
Taking the proven, award winning, design of the Khard packs, Arc'teryx has developed the Miura 35 pack for the general consumer market. They are now shipping and are available at retailers. I stumbled across one at the local REI and took the following comparison pictures...
