morgxn: vital
By Kian Earley
vital opens with a confession. “translucent” is equal parts sadness and reclamation, an admittance of heartbreak while also a refusal to accept it as defeat. It opens the door to the dance between woeful introspection and cathartic release that is a pillar of morgxn’s discography. I believe hopeful is the correct emotion to associate this with. There is an immutable honesty to his words and a clarity leading to deeply understanding the bittersweetness that underscores them. The eleven tracks of vital are a physicalization of his most deeply held beliefs.
As personal as those can get, the album is also rooted in community. Some of its most compelling moments come from songs that speak to a collective. “home” listens like a direct call to action, embodying the youthful determination from which found family arises. “xx” radicalizes self love. These messages also seamlessly align with morgxn’s pursuits outside the realm of music. He frequently collaborates with Covenant House in his home state of Tennessee, and had accepted clothing donations for the organization at the merch stand of shows. Such actions are the echo of vital’s undeniable significance.
Its reach to LGBTQ listeners comes from a place of sincerity that can only be achieved through personal experience. There is a profound conversation occurring between the music and the people receiving it. The complex and at times fraught relationship with masculinity that morgxn has experienced sexuality through the lens of allows for compassion towards the turbulence his fans may be going through. In speaking out about how the former affected his trajectory as a musician, morgxn remains gracious. He sees progress from his youth, but is aware that his is only a single perspective.
This characteristic thoughtfulness has carried him far since starting out in 2016. “love you with the lights on” set the standard for his commitment to authenticity. From this first release to the Robert Smith approved cover of “boys don’t cry” closing out vital, morgxn posits himself as an artist in pursuit of longevity. With vital and beyond, he intends to leave a lasting, compassionate impression on anyone who tunes in.
