Ah, yes. For those who have been following my blog for a while, you may already be aware of my pregame Kiibo. But for those who don’t, let’s introduce you to the robot that came before Kiibo; Kurata.
Kurata was specifically designed and built by a man known as Professor Idabashi for the gimmick of the fifty-third season of the Danganronpa television series, which was decided to be audience participation. Prototypes of the robot began surfacing as early as the fiftieth season, but official testing on the audience surrogate began during production and filming of the fifty-second season.
The robot was designed to be an expy of Makoto Naegi, complete with similar hairstyle, idiot hair and ideals that would become clear as its personality was rewritten during actual filming of the newest season. Kurata’s creator, alongside the team analyising and maintaining his systems, did not particularly care for nor neglect their creation; just making sure they were doing their job correctly.
To properly test that the robot could respond to audience commands and record video while blending in with regular high-schoolers, Team Danganronpa sent their prototype, under careful supervision, into the ‘real’ word. He was enrolled into a local high-school and thus was prompted to learn about the world around him and find potential participants for the latest season.
As he lacks emotional development and proper free will, Kurata is extremely blunt and quite aggressive with his actions. He does not understand sarcasm, humour or vague comments. However, somewhere deep within his circuits he can process some form of ‘emotion’, whatever it may be. But he will often dismiss these as glitches or oddities within his programming. When he finds someone he deems 'worthy’ of becoming a new contenstant on Danganronpa, his behaviour changes to a far more aggressive stalking type, desperate to learn their weaknesses and exploit them for his own gain. Or so people would think…if he had the ability to even come up with that kind of plan in the first place.
Despite his very threatening and aggressive demeanour, Kurata is actually quite pacifistic, though this is mainly due to having unrestrained strength mechanics and disallowing the use of them due to potentially causing serious injury. There is also a chance that a person may present themselves with such a harsh story of their life that he may find himself letting them go, even if he previously wished to do anything to get them to audition. However, whether they are signs of actual emotion is up for debate, as they are often 'corrected’ before they can be found again.
Most important to note is that it’s actually quite difficult to tell Kurata is a robot. Though his weird eyes, unnaturally stiff movements and tight uniform may attract a more eagle-eyed person’s suspicions, his black uniform and hat were purposefully designed to be plain so as to not make him stand out too much. His hat, in particular, is large not only for the sake of hiding his antenna…but also to give him the opportunity to shield his mechanical eyes from the view of others.
One final thing: Kurata was not the first name assigned to the robot by his creators or Team Danganronpa. His actual name is Project: P-O-V; they never bothered to give him a real name at first. However, after some failed attempts where the robot attempted to introduce himself with his codename, they quickly scrapped the idea and made up a name. And while Kurata has no actual last name, he simply tacks on his creator’s last name in situations so as to appear 'more normal’.
