Ode to the Pimpkin - Year 5
It has been five years since the Homestuck Kickstarter was funded, and to this day I still feel the effects of it. Most of my followers and the people I follow here are from that time, but I haven’t posted on here in over a year. I only ever made my tumblr because of the Kickstucks.
However, the most long lasting effect of the Homestuck Kickstarter for me was the Pimpkin. Some of you may remember the old Memo on Pesterchum that spawned from a typo in the Kickstarter comments. During the course of the campaign, the memo helped produce a small piece of collaborative fanart in the form of the small pixel art collab. We had entirely too many people, the memo never closed, and keeping up with the breakneck pace of the kickstarter was hectic as hell. I sometimes look back on this moment as one of my favorite internet moments.
But after the kickstarter ended, so did most of the Pimpkin. People lost interest and went their separate ways leaving just a few of us to hold the memo together. And we did. We kept it alive year after year, and we slowly built back up to a modest number of old kickstarter chums as well as some new ones. We even started annual traditions like the “shit lets be santa” gift exchange.
Now here we are on the eve of the Pimpkin’s 5th anniversary. I have had the privilege of spending the last half a decade talking to some of my best friends daily. Though some things have changed, it has been one of the greatest experiences of my life. So whatever happens with the release of Hiveswap, the kickstarter was all worth it for what I got out of it. I hope many of you also formed similar bonds and feel the same.
So to Kickstucks, and Pimpkin members both past and present, thank you all for the last five years. It has been my honor to know you all and be part of the Homestuck fandom.
