We got the opportunity to talk to Ray from LA break-out band, Kid Cadaver recently to discuss their new single ‘Personal Addict’! Check it out!
Describe your latest single ‘Personal Addict’
It was so different when we brought it into the studio, it was basically a totally different song. We were working with a new producer for the first time and he started presenting these other weird ideas that we wouldn’t have thought of otherwise. We all love this song; we recorded one other song with that producer and we felt like ‘Personal Addict’ would be a good turn from our past music.
Was the writing of this song any different from your past work?
Working with somebody new was cool, we had been working with the same producer for a long time so we had started being able to expect what would happen when we went into the studio. For this song, I wrote just a really quick demo in the van and played it through a crappy little speaker while singing the vocals and that was all we had when we went into the studio this time. We took that song in so many different directions, it sounded like Death Cab For Cutie for a good second, to the point where we almost released it like that. But we ended up tweaking it in a way that we all really liked. It was a really collaborative effort, so it was a lot different than how we usually write; it was a lot more of an adventure.
Should we be looking out for a music video for it?
We shot a music video the week that we released it! It’s going to be out sometime soon. It’s a really funny video, we’re really excited for it.
Who have been your biggest influences as of late?
Our direct influences right now are all over the place. We all listen to different music at any given time, Kenzo listens to a lot of really hip kinda lowkey bands, I listen to the same song for a month basically, and Jeremy kind of does the same thing. We don’t really have one unified influence right now, which is kind of crazy to think of. We all bring different things to the table.
Have you been to any shows that have really stuck with you and inspired you to build up your own live set? If so, who?
One of the things I remember is the old Warped Tour days like 5 years ago. I saw Underoath and it was so nuts, easily the best show I’ve ever seen. It came at the perfect time too, when you’re just getting into the band so you know their whole discography and you haven’t gotten over it yet. Aaron was still in the band and he broke his drumstick and threw it out into the crowd so I jumped up and caught it. I just remember thinking that I never want to be in a band or play a show that doesn’t have energy. Even though our music doesn’t really sound like that, we’re still going to go nuts on stage. If you go to our show, you can tell that we have a lot more energy than other bands that sound like us. Jeremy is known for breaking stuff and throwing equipment around during shows. We all really enjoy that and never want to lose it.
This was your first release in a while, is there more to come in the near future?
This Summer we had a huge talk about how we were going to start releasing music a lot more rapidly, so we’re aiming to do that. We’re recording more music right now, and I think we’re definitely going to release another song before the end of the year, with more to come early next year. We’re really excited to release more music next year and keep it going.
You’re about to embark on a headline tour this month, is there anything you’re particularly excited about?
It’s going to be our first time in Vancouver so we’re all excited about that! We’ve been to Canada before but it was pretty much our worst tour ever because everyone got sick, we had to cancel a show, Jeremy couldn’t come, and it was just nuts. We’re excited to go to Canada and have a good time and not stress. I’m also really happy to have Jeremy with us this time! Tour is always fun, so there’s nothing specific to watch for, but it’s always cool to see what happens because you never know what will.
Will you be doing more of your tour vlogs along the way?
I want to! I’m pretty much the only one that does them, people only film if I hand them the camera then I edit everything. It all kind of depends on what I can do on the road. I enjoy it and think it’s fun for people that are interested. It let’s people know what it’s like to be on tour with us!
Your songs have gotten some serious airtime on KROQ, how does it feel to have your tracks played on a major radio station?
It’s really crazy and surreal. Your song comes on and it’s one of those moments where you’re crazy smiling and laughing even though you’re trying not to.
Do you feel as though Kid Cadaver made the best of 2016? If not, what do you want to do in 2017 to top this year?
Good question, I think every year, even if you had a great year, you feel like you could’ve done a little bit better. I definitely like the fact that we were able to branch out a little bit, meet some new producers, and work on songs with people that we’d never worked with before. Looking back, i feel like we explored ourselves in 2016, so I think 2017 could be more concise. We want to release songs at least every couple of months, so maybe we’ll have like 10 songs out next year.
