New KidAdmit Features: Notes & Compare!

We are excited to share that you can now add notes and better compare your favorite schools!  Every parent has different criteria to evaluate what's best for their children so we created two exciting new features that help with exactly that!  

Add Notes to Schools: You will now be able to add notes in each school's profile and see your notes in "Saved Schools".  Notes help you capture what you like best about the school, anything important you saw or heard during the school tour, as well as anything you want to make sure to remember.

Compare Your Saved Schools: You can also compare and prioritize schools in "Saved Schools" according to the criteria that matters most to you. Choose the categories that are important to you family and move schools around based on your personal preferences and priorities.

Behind the scenes of KidAdmit by Jackson Solway

Do you ever wonder what's it like to work at a startup?  Or what goes on behind the scenes at these companies? Unfortunately, questions like these are often overlooked. 

We wanted to change that paradigm and share the real story. Through our good friend Rose Broome (Handup), we met Jackson Solway, a very talented photojournalist, who now creates Startup Portraits. These stories are an ongoing series of Bay Area startups, their founders, and their stories. We are thrilled to be featured!

Working with Jackson allows us to share our side of the story - why we started KidAdmit, our vision, what we are trying to accomplish, and our challenges. This portrait shows a very real day in the life of our team.

Dad's new best friend = KidAdmit

Dads are more involved than ever when it comes to family decisions because moms are clearly busy.  This makes me smile because parenting requires both co-founders (startup humor!).  I am in a similar situation since my husband and I are both full time working parents and have to rely on each other consistently as we weave back and forth between busy times with work.  

At KidAdmit, we are seeing that dads are taking over preschool admissions. There are so many benefits: they stay involved, help their busy partner and understand the education system.  We love this and want to help!  

While school visits are heavily encouraged, Dads can go to KidAdmit and manage the entire preschools admissions in one place. Applications can be submitted directly through our site and we even handle all the application fees with a credit card.  You can do it all on your computer from the couch.  So come on Dads, help us ladies out!

Pregnant too early??

Sometimes I feel that I gave birth a bit too early. Early? Yes, early!

I gave birth in the fall of 2008.  We had everything set up and ready for the baby.  Well, we did for one week.  After that, we need more of everything!  Diapers, wipes, pump accessories, cleaning supplies, the list goes on.  You are thinking, "Order it from Amazon or Diapers.com and you are done", right?  

Not so fast.  In 2008, shipping charges were EXPENSIVE and there was no Amazon Prime. Diapers.com hadn't quite become well known until a bit later.  I drove to an actual store with my newborn to buy stuff every week.

I was ecstatic 2.5 years later when my second child was born and shipments from Amazon and Diapers.com became a weekly habit.

We have come a long way in a few short years but have plenty ways to still go.

The KidAdmit Story

KidAdmit was created from my own frustrating experience of enrolling my son, Nishane (now 4) into a preschool in San Francisco.  The funny thing is that it was only 2.5 years ago that I started this process but boy have things changed.  My friends who have become moms within the last 2 years, get diapers and everything else shipped for FREE through mom conscious sites like Amazon and Diapers.com.  When I became a mom 4 years ago, I had to go to the STORE because shipping was so expensive.  It's amazing how technology can benefit us and become part of our lives so quickly.   

As we get used to these amazing conveniences that help us quickly and efficiently complete our "To Do" list, we struggle when we are in situations where technology hasn't caught up. One example of this, the preschool admission process.  Mom's today can accomplish many things online during her downtime (typically in the evening when the kiddos are asleep).  We research, compare and pay ONLINE!  We prefer this because it's easy, convenient and helps us maximize our time at work and with our family.  When I told my friends about the preschool admissions process, they were shocked.  Yes, they knew it was competitive but it was the process that was shocking.  They couldn't believe they had to call or visit each individual preschool to verify information, fill out paper applications, mail in the application with a check without any sort of record and hope they hear back.  I knew there was a better way.  We currently do all of these things on our smartphones, why does this have to be any different? So KidAdmit was born!  

I hope sharing this story gives you an understanding of why we created KidAdmit and where we are planning to go.  Our hope is to help all parents feel supported and confident through the important, but nerve-wracking, process of preschool enrollment and to create a better experience for parents and preschools so both can effectively communicate throughout the admissions process.
